Van Walters

Van Walters, longtime resident of Durango passed away on August 26, 2019. He was one day shy of his 67th birthday. Van Douglas Walters was born on August 27, 1952 to Hiram and Gay Walters in Paintsville, KY, although he grew up in Frenchburg, Kentucky. Van graduated from Morehead State University with a degree in Biology. He joined the Army and was stationed in Frederick, Maryland to work in research. When he left the Army he traveled all over the US and eventually landed in Durango, Colorado in 1980. He loved Durango and the surrounding mountains and made it his home. Van loved the outdoors and worked in construction where he felt part of the growing community. He spent time hunting, fishing and studying the wildlife. When he could no longer hike and fish, he would spend his time at the library, being an avid reader all his life. He is survived by one sister, Diana Strnatka and her family. Per Van’s request, there will be no services, but he will forever be in the mountains that he loved.
