Eileen Schlough

Eileen Loretta (Fairchild) Schlough Native and longtime Creede resident, Eileen Schlough, better known as Bunny, 85, passed away Monday June 17th in St. Anthony Hospital in Denver with her daughters by her side. Bunny was born in North Creede on December 2, 1933 to Byron ‘Pappy’ Fairchild and Annie ‘Mom’ (Thom) Fairchild. She was the 8th of nine children. She graduated from Creede High School in ’52. After graduation, she moved to Denver to be a governess and a year later moved to Wichita, KS to attend business school. After business school she moved to Idaho to stay with her sister Wanda and worked at the grocery plant. She then moved home to Creede and worked for the newspaper in Monte Vista. She married Gerald Schlough on December 7, 1957. Together they had three children, Robert, Becky and JoAnne. They lived in Creede and then moved to Wisconsin for about a year. They returned to Creede and Jerry had an opportunity to make a little more money so they moved to Grants, NM. After that, they moved back to Creede to stay. She was always taking care of her parents and after her ‘Mom’ passed, ‘Pop’ spent almost every night and most holidays with her family for dinner. At the end of 2013 she had to move to Denver to live with her daughters due to medical needs. She was able to go to Creede a few times a year to just be home and very much looked forward to those trips. She loved being with family and friends. Every holiday was celebrated with a feast. All other days weren’t much different because she had a full dinner on the table every night. She worked very hard for many years regardless of incredible physical issues. She worked at most of the ranches throughout the area, 4UR, Soward’s, Pearl Lakes, LaGarita, Wason and Freemon’s. She cleaned the school and always found a lot of things to just laugh about. She was an active member of the Rebekah Lodge and despite working and raising kids, she still managed to find time to attend and travel to sporting games to follow the Creede teams throughout the valley and beyond. Favorite things she loved to do were reading, picking berries, making jelly, bowling, pine coning, gathering wood for the winter, picnics and in the winter snowmobile trips with hot chili and cocoa. She enjoyed just sitting with ‘the girls’ when they could to watch the stories on TV and have lunch. Sunday and evening drives through the mountains was family time that she always looked forward to. There isn’t a baby she didn’t love. When they grew up, well - that kinda depended. Bunny is preceded in death by her parents, Byron ‘Pappy’ Fairchild and Annie (Thom) Fairchild, husband Gerald ‘Jerry’ Schlough, in-laws Robert and Gerda (Elstead) Schlough, brothers and sisters Frances ‘Franny’ (Miles) Crawford, George ‘Bud’ Miles, Vivian (Miles) McCray, Byron E. ‘Barney’ Fairchild, Wanda (Fairchild) Wanzer ,Darlene (Fairchild) Lohr, Frank Fairchild, Richard Fairchild. In-laws I - .D. Crawford, Brian Beck, Dick Lehman, Arletta Fairchild, Loyd Wanzer, Art Lohr, Rose May Dabney, Ron Wunrow and Ginny Schlough. Nieces and nephews- Larry Lehman, Wayne Crawford, I.D. Crawford, Christine Crawford, Eddy Fairchild, Linda Lohr. Bunny is survived by her children, granddaughter, great grandchildren, in-laws, and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held in Creede on July 6th at 1:00 PM at the Red Brick Church (Creede Community Church). A reception at the church and a graveside service held by the Rebekah Lodge will follow. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Creede Community Church, Ladies Aid, the National Kidney Foundation, or save that money to get a colonoscopy!
