Alex Gregory passed away from natural causes on January 3, 2019 in Boulder, CO where he spent the last 20 years of his life. He was born on September 20, 1966 in Norwalk, CT to Evelyn S. Lawrence and Robert H. Gregory. He is survived by his father Robert H. Gregory, stepmother Susan P. Gregory, siblings Tuck Gregory, Scott Gregory, Lyn Gregory, Virginia Abbett, and TJ O’Connor. He was preceded by Evelyn S. Lawrence. Alex was a graduate of Darien High School in Darien, CT, class of 1985. He also graduated with a business degree from Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, NH in June 1989. Several years later he completed an apprenticeship program with the Boat Building School at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, ME. Among other things, he built a 21-foot sailing craft. He invented many things throughout his life. In 1998, he was granted a patent for “The Infinity Chair” — an endlessly adjustable chair that he, and those he shared it with, experienced many hours of enjoyment and solace. Alex was a unique and brilliant creative soul who applied many of his talents and ideas throughout different aspects of his life, both personally and professionally. He was a woodworker, metal worker, carpenter, boat builder, furniture and clothing maker, inventor, engineer, new age philosopher and spiritual seeker, environmentalist, mountaineer, and a gentle soul who loved nature. He could often be seen dipping his feet in a creek or walking barefoot on any patch of earth he could find. He enjoyed kayaking, camping, hiking, exploring, creating, inventing, learning and reading among other things. As much as he loved being sovereign to himself and his way of life, he was always passionate about sharing his thoughts and ideas with others and greatly enjoyed playing with words—which was affectionately known as “Alex speak”. He was most comfortable tucked into a cabin in the woods, watching the water flow by and the hummingbirds feed. His raucous laughter, wild sense of humor, and coyote trickster nature will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. Although Alex lived in Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Colorado, his heart has always been on the coast of Maine, where he lived for several years and was hoping to return. His family will hold a private ceremony in Maine late this summer to spread his ashes and return his body to the waters that once held him so dearly. To honor his life, a memorial fund has been set up through the Maine Maritime Museum to help fund the Discovery Boatbuilding Program they offer with local schools and students.
