Vitold P. (Poppy) Vaitekunas age 91 of Bridgeport, beloved husband of 45 years to Josephine Ruziskey Vaitekunas died peacefully on Friday June 12, 2013 with his family by his side. Born in Bridgeport he was the son of the late Peter and Amelia Loskikinin Vaitekunas. A lifelong Bridgeport Resident, he was a Veteran of WWII serving in the Army as a Sergeant with the 416th Bombardment Squadron he had participated in campaigns in Algeria, Rome, Normandy and the Rhineland. A retired employee of Sikorsky Aircraft where he worked for over 25 years as a manufacturing engineer and was a member of its Quarter Century Club and Sikorsky Retirees. A past vice president and member of the Lithuanian Young Men’s Society, Vitold was also a member of the Elks of Bridgeport, Knights of Columbus-Mother Cabrini Counsel, V.F.W. Post #7788 Milford and the American Legion Sylvan Crest Post #177. Vitold enjoyed the big bands and polka music and was a member of the polka cousins. He enjoyed swimming, gardening and the landscaping of his property and after a long day of hard work Vito had his Starbucks coffee. A special note of thanks to St. Joseph’s Manor, the nurses and aides on the second floor A and its hospice care unit especially Wendy and Sheen for their compassionate care. Survivors in addition to his wife Josephine, a daughter Jean Cravalho, granddaughter Jeannie Franco, great-grandchildren, Nicole and Christina Franco, a great great-grandson Tanner Franco all of Bridgeport, a daughter-in-law Jean Sibick of Stratford, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son Robert Sibick. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday at 10am in St. Andrews Church followed by interment with full military honors in St. John’s Cemetery, Stratford. Calling hours will take place on Sunday from 4 to 7 pm in the Commerce Hill Funeral Home, 4798 Main St. Bridgeport
