Bernard C. Novack was born August 3, 1933 in Englewood, New Jersey to the late Bernard and Helen (Gackenheimer) Novack. Bernard was the devoted husband of 67 years of Dorothy (Mergl) Novack. Bernie and his wife, Dorothy, lived in West New York, NJ and moved to Saddle Brook, NJ where they raised their four children. They retired to Forked River, NJ in 1994, and moved to Enfield, CT in 2018. In addition to his wife Dorothy, he leaves his four children and their spouses, Linda and Stan Sikorski, Holly and David Chaffee, Diana and Rob Bennett, Thomas and Denise Novack, his nine grandchildren, and his four great-grandchildren. He was also predeceased by his sister, Jean Caccioli; and his brother, John Novack. Bernie was a graduate of Memorial High School in West New York, NJ and the RCA Institute of Technology. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War from 1951-1955. Bernie coached a U.S. Air Force Soccer team in England and played soccer in England for the Finchingfield Rovers.   Bernie worked in the Bell System for Western Electric, NY Telephone, NJ Bell, and AT&T as a Systems Consultant. He also worked for the US Post Office in Saddle Brook, NJ. After retirement from AT&T, he worked for the Superior Court of NJ as a court aide. Bernie served in the Saddle Brook Volunteer Fire Department, Engine Company #1, for 31 years in positions up to Battalion Chief, Chief Fire Inspector, and Chaplain. He is a lifetime member of the South Bergen Fire Chiefs Association and the NJ State Exempt Firemen’s Association. He coached little league and soccer in Saddle Brook, NJ, where he was one of the founding members of the Saddle Brook children’s soccer league. Bernie served as the Director of the Old Guard of Forked River for two terms and was also the Adjutant for Post 517 Forked River American Legion. Bernie was a true role model for his family. He instilled strong values, a good work ethic, and the importance of giving back to the community in his children. Bernie and Grandpa Bernie will be missed by all and his family, who will continue his legacy.   Calling hours are Wednesday, January 13, 2021 from 12 – 2pm at the Browne Memorial Chapels, 43 Shaker Road with a service at 2pm.  The burial will be in George Washington Memorial Park Cemetery in Paramus, NJ.
