Carol Ann “Snookie/Thelma” (Mitchell) Preston, of Enfield, entered peacefully into eternal life at the age of 77 on Tuesday (April 24, 2012) surrounded by her family in the comfort of her home. Carol was the beloved wife of the late Leonard George Preston for 48 years and daughter of the late William and Ella (Hood) Mitchell. She was born on Dec. 27, 1934 in Lowell, MA. Carol received her teaching degree in 1956 from Lowell Teachers College/UMASS-Lowell and taught 4th grade in Tewksbury, MA for 2 years. After, her marriage to George in 1958, she became a Good Naval wife, traveling around the country for over 20 years before settling in Enfield at Crescent Lake in 1972. Her life revolved around her family and home. She was a devoted and dedicated homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother; family was the center of her life. Snookie’s greatest joy was time spent with her entire family and many special friends. She loved cooking and baking for everyone, playing cards, bingo and visiting the casino with her buddies. She enjoyed gardening, traveling and cheering on the UCONN Huskies women’s basketball, the Boston Red Sox and N.E. Patriots. Snookie was also known as “Everyone’s Grandma” to her grandchildren’s friends throughout their school years. She volunteered for many years at the Enfield Senior Center with her pals, as well as the many events at Crescent Lake. Carol is survived by her two loving children: Susan Gagnon and husband David of Enfield and Leonard G. Preston, Jr. and wife Ann of Virginia Beach, VA, her five beloved grandchildren: Alison Preston (Ayman Harby), Amber Preston (Benjamin Hall), David, Sarah and Daniel Gagnon, and her four great-grandchildren: Leila, Haylie, & Danielle Gagnon and Lauren Hall. She is also survived by her siblings: Marion Stanley & husband Neal of Chelmsford, MA, Raymond Mitchell & wife Shirley of Dracut, MA, Patricia O’Neill of Weymouth, MA and Robert Mitchell of Lowell, MA, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents and husband she was predeceased by a son Timothy Preston, a brother William Mitchell, Jr., a nephew William Mitchell, III and a niece Cheri Browne. Relatives and friends may gather with her family during calling hours on Thursday (April 26, 2012) from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels 43 Shaker Rd. Enfield. The funeral procession will form at 10:30 am on Friday (April 27, 2012) from Browne’s and proceed to St. Bernard Church, 426 Hazard Ave. Enfield for a 11:30 am Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. Bernard Cemetery, Enfield. Memorial donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St. Framingham, MA 01701.
