Dorothy Whiteley, 88, of Enfield, beloved wife John Whiteley, passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2013. She was born at home on August 31, 1925 in the Thompsonville section of Enfield; the daughter of the late Edward and Virginia (Rioux) Kiernan; and sister of the late Edward Kiernan, Eileen Ward-Larensen and Claire Lynch. Dorothy lived her entire life in Enfield, graduated from Enfield High School in 1944, and married her high school sweetheart, John Whiteley, in 1946. The couple celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary earlier this year. Dorothy was a dedicated mother and, after her children were grown, she helped her husband with the operation of Moore Rug Company in Enfield, continuing to keep the books for the company until a few years ago. She enjoyed spending time with her family, both at home and at Cape Cod. Dorothy loved reading, watching the Red Sox and caring for her dogs. She is survived by her husband, John Whiteley; her four sons and their spouses, Jack and Helene, Robert and Pamela and Kevin and Heide all of Somers, and Brian and Kimberly of Ashland, MA. She also leaves seven loving grandchildren, Jennifer, Katherine, Elizabeth, Evyn, Connor, Hannah and Jack; and four great grandchildren. Family and friends will gather on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 by 11:30 a.m. at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels for a procession to St. Martha Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Interment will be held at St. Patrick King Street Cemetery. Dorothy’s family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels, 43 Shaker Road, Enfield, CT 06082.
