Edward James Cunningham Jr., 80, of Somers, CT died peacefully at home on Friday, February 6, 2015 surrounded by loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Eileen (Bourque) Cunningham. High school sweethearts, Ed and Eileen recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary. Ed was born on June 30, 1934 in Thompsonville, CT, son of the late Edward J. and Eileen (O’Connor) Cunningham. Ed was a longtime resident of Enfield prior to moving to Somers in 1986. Ed served his country proudly with the US Army. Prior to retiring in 1997, he was employed as Director of Contracts by Kaman Aerospace for 45 years. He dedicated a great deal of his free time coaching little league baseball and youth hockey in Enfield. Ed was an avid outdoorsman and nature lover who enjoyed fishing, hunting, and golfing. One of Ed’s greatest joys was spending time at his lake house in Maine. He loved the simple beauty of his surroundings and especially enjoyed watching the loons on the lake. He was a devout parishioner and usher at All Saints Church in Somers for many years. Besides his wife Eileen, Ed is survived by his children; Edward W. Cunningham & wife, Marita, Kimberly LaBroad & husband, David, James Cunningham & wife, Lynn, Colleen Rush & husband, John all of Somers, his beloved grandchildren; Lindsey Cunningham, James Cunningham & his girlfriend, Melanie, Jenna Cunningham, and Erin Rush. He also leaves his sisters; Eileen Russell of Madison, CT, Joan Payne of Chatham, MA, Rita Hartley & husband, Jack of Enfield and his brother Joseph Cunningham of Enfield, along with many nieces and nephews. A wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he will be greatly missed. There are no calling hours. A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at All Saints Church, 25 School Street, Somers, CT 06071. A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
