Elizabeth Hanks Obituary

Elizabeth “Betty” (Boucher) Hanks, 94, passed to the Light Saturday morning, December 17, 2011, at Parkway Pavilion in Enfield. Betty was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on April 25, 1917 to Daniel and Mae (O’Connell) Boucher, who predeceased her in 1928 and 1938, respectively. In the late 1930’s, Betty worked for Wise-Smith, G. Fox & Co., and during WWII, for Arrow-Hart & Hegeman. After the war, Betty met her husband Norman “Buddy” Hanks through a mutual friend; they were married and had two daughters, and resided in the Hartford area. Later, Norm’s health began to fail and he died in 1980. Betty was employed with the State of Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles for many years and retired in the early 1980’s. Following her retirement, Betty enjoyed dancing, learning sign language and playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Betty was very devout to the Blessed Virgin, and made many friends during the forty years she spent promoting The Central Association of the Miraculous Medal. She was also very proud of her Irish heritage. Betty is survived by her daughters, Nancy (Hanks) Bouchard and her husband, James, of Old Orchard Beach, ME, and Evelyn (Hanks) Marvin and her husband, William, of Enfield; her grandchildren, TSgt. Steven Marvin and his wife, Heidi, of Frederica, DE, and Leigh Anne (Marvin) Sherman and her husband, Lawrence, of Enfield; and four great-grandchildren: Taylor and Kaitlyn; Madelyn and Aiden. Family and friends will gather on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 by 9:00 a.m. at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels, for a procession to Holy Family Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be held in St. Patrick King Street Cemetery. Betty’s family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels, 43 Shaker Road, Enfield, CT 06082. We sincerely express our deepest gratitude to the caregivers of Parkway Pavilion for their love and care for our mother during her stay. May you finally find the rest you so deserve, Mom. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street Framingham, MA 01701.
