Flora Brown Obituary

Flora “Ethel” (Locke) Brown, 103, of Enfield, beloved wife of the late Walter E. Brown, entered into eternal peace on December 31, 2017, at The Suffield House. Born on September 11, 1914, Ethel was the daughter of the late Albert and Flora Locke. She grew up in Stafford Springs in a much simpler time where she walked a mile each way to school no matter what the weather. Always loving and eager to help, Ethel often looked after her five brothers with her sister Agnes. She went on to proudly work for many years at Johnson’s Woolen Mill as a spooler, supporting her three daughters and purchasing her first home in West Stafford. Ethel was a remarkable woman who always adapted to the times from making do with rations during World War II to embracing her daughters’ love of Elvis. In 1958, she married Walter, the love of her life, and they enjoyed decades together in their home on Gordon Lane in Enfield. Above all, Ethel loved surrounding herself with her family and friends, hosting countless spaghetti dinners and opening up her home each Christmas Eve for unforgettable celebrations where all were welcome and no one left hungry. In addition to being an incredible cook, she was famous for her delicious apple pies. Ethel also loved to crochet, making many afghans over the years. She enjoyed serving her community as a member of Amaranth and Eastern Star, and was delighted to dress up in beautiful gowns for their special events. In her 103 years, Ethel built a legacy of love and kindness, filling the lives of so many with smiles and special memories. She is survived by her three daughters, Annie Forbes, Gloria Mattarelli and Nancy Leighton; her grandchildren and their spouses, Donna and Brian Harnedy, Mark and Lisa (Leighton) Lombardi, and Jerry and Janet Leighton; her great grandchildren Kristin, Brian and Ashlee Harnedy, Zandra Trudeau and Trisha Bogar; her special nephews Walter and Gordon Smith, along with her other nephews, cousins and relatives. Ethel’s family would like to thank the staff at The Suffield House for their loving care over the past four years. Funeral services and burial will be private at the request of her family.
