George A Poirier Enfield, Connecticut Obituary

George A Poirier

George A. Poirier, 86, of Enfield, passed away peacefully Monday, October 5 at St. Francis hospice with family at his side. George was born on July 27, 1929 in Taunton, MA to the late Joseph and Gilberte (Marcotte) Poirier. In addition to his wife, love of his life and sweetheart of 63 years, Claire (LeBrun), he leaves behind his children, Debra Corbin and husband, Thomas of Rocky Hill; George Poirier and his wife, Rebecca, of Madison, WI; Denise Baum and her husband, Michael, of Pomfret; and Sandra Campbell and her husband Anthony, of Canton; and 10 grandchildren, Andrea O'Neill, Caitlin Fulda, Tanner Poirier, Travis Poirier, Kristen Xeller, Michael Baum, Matthew Baum, Wyatt Campbell, Noah Campbell, and Elise Campbell; and 6 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind a sister, Doris Murphy of Lakeville, MA. George was predeceased by his parents and his brothers Raymond, Alfred and Rene. George served in the army during WWII and received his Associates Degree from the UMASS Stockbridge Agricultural College. He retired from Hamilton Standard in 1991 after a 38 year career there. His lifelong love of gardening was apparent to all who visited 'his little kingdom' and he took pride surveying his yard daily and sharing his plants and homegrown seedlings with friends and family. George loved games of any type: outdoor games of darts, bocce and golf; all board games, and card games of cribbage, set back and wild and crazy, free for all games of solitaire played with the entire family at a very large table. In friendly games of chance, he excelled at 'getting a hunch, and betting a bunch'. George was not afraid to experiment in the kitchen and his family benefited from his love of bread making in the winter and pies all year round - his favorite being rhubarb with just a bit of strawberries. He was a perfectionist in diction and grammar; an excellent speller - once coming in 2nd place in the St. Martha's School Spelling Bee; and a crossword puzzle aficionado. George’s family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 from 4:00 until 6:30 p.m. followed by a Service of Remembrance at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels, 43 Shaker Road, Enfield, CT 06082. A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Lung Association.
