Helen E. (Valentine) Thorstenson, of Windsor Locks and formerly of Granby & Enfield, entered peacefully into eternal rest at the age of 93 with loved ones by her side. Helen was born on October 18, 1917 in New Britain, CT a daughter of the late John and Margaret (Liskauskas) Valentine and had resided in Granby for 30 years, then in Enfield for 36 years and in Windsor Locks the past 4 years. Helen had been employed for a time at Asnuntuck Community College as telephone operator and was known as “Coach” to the lunch time walkers but her main focus was caring for her home and family. Thru the years Helen created numerous beautiful needlepoint and cross-stich art works that are scattered all over the country amongst her family and friends. She loved to listen to Pavarotti, watch the birds, gardening, cooking and time spent with family and friends. Helen was the beloved mother to Patricia Matt (Richard) of Enfield, Clifford Thorstenson (Ann) of Granby, David Thorstenson (Patricia) of Manchester, George Thorstenson (Andre) of Granby, Linda Petrella (Robert) of Glen Allen, VA, Sandra of CA and Mark Thorstenson (Leesa) of Brooklyn, CT, loving grandmother to 16 grandchildren, great-grandmother to 6 great-grandchildren and great great-grandmother to 1 great great grandchild. She also is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Helen was predeceased by three brothers John; William and Leon Valentine, two sisters; Adele Rosia and Margaret Thompson and a son-in-law Sam. The Thorstenson families would like to especially thank all the wonderful caregivers from Bickford Health Care Center for the attention, care, love & laughter given to their mom for the past four years that Helen was a resident there. Also, to the Vitas Hospice Services especially Melody, a angel sent from heaven, who embraced and held us tight in her arms with sincere compassion. Relatives and friends may gather with Helen’s family during calling hours on Saturday (April 2, 2011) from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels 43 Shaker Rd. Enfield, followed by a Prayer and Remembrance Service with Pastor John Morgans officiating at 4:00 pm. Burial will be at her families convenience in the Granby Cemetery in Granby, CT. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in her memory may be made to Bickford Health Care Center 14 Main St. Windsor Locks, CT 06096 or Vitas Hospice Services 255 Pitkin St. East Hartford, CT 06108.
