James Cherry, Sr.

James D. Cherry, Sr., of Rocky Hill, passed from his journey on earth to eternal life, to join his beloved wife of 62 years, Claire E. (Wood) Cherry (2/24/07) at the age of 87 on Saturday March 7, 2009 at Hartford Hospital surrounded by loved ones. He was born on July 13, 1921 in Toledo, Ohio, son of the late Burton L. and Amy E. (Deay) Cherry and was a longtime resident of Enfield and communicant of St. Martha's Church. He served his country honorably with the US Army Air Force during WW II in Panama. Prior to his retirement in 1984 James was employed for over 40 years with Monsanto Co., Chicopee, MA. He enjoyed oil painting, classical music even taught himself to play the harmonica, guitar and organ, traveling with Claire having gone on many religious pilgrimages, an avid Red Sox, Giants, UCONN Huskies Men's & Women's Sports fan, was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing cards especially Bridge. He loved time spent with his family and he leaves many fond memories for them to cherish. He is survived by his loving children; James D. Cherry Jr. and his wife, Linda of Marlborough, Marilyn Scheck, and her husband, Eugene of Somers, Linda Child, and her husband, Stephen of Woodstock, Nancy Couture and her husband John of Ellington, his seven beloved grandchildren, James M. Cherry, Amy C. Scheck, Jeremy C. Child, Cara M. Scheck, Derek J. Child, Daniel V. Grimaldi and David M. Grimaldi. He is also survived by a brother, Robert Cherry of Montana and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by several brothers and sisters. Funeral services for James will be held on Wednesday March 11, 2009 with the funeral procession forming at 9 a.m. from Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels 43 Shaker Rd. Enfield to St. Martha's Church 214 Brainard Rd. for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial. Interment with military honors will take place in St. Patrick's King St. Cemetery, Enfield. His family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday March 10, 2009 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels. <br>In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Marlborough Food Bank, c/o Marlborough Town Hall, North Main St., Marlborough, CT 06447, St. Martha's Church, or a charity of the donor's choice.
