Michael Edward Young passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at the age of 59, surrounded by his loving family and friends at the Suffield House after a courageous battle with cancer. Michael was born in Springfield, MA in 1952, the son of Carmella (Iacolino) Young Desrosiers and the late Edward Stuart Young. He grew up in Enfield, CT, graduating from Enfield High School in 1970. He continued his education at the University of Connecticut, graduating in 1974, Magna Cum Laude and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society for academic achievement. After graduating college he lived in Coventry, CT for many years before making Windsor, CT his home. Michael was employed for over 20 years at Pitney Bowes in Sales, Human Resources and as Regional Manager retiring to achieve his lifelong dream of creating his own landscaping company. He, once again, continued his education to attain his license as a Master Gardener. He was very creative with his work and loved being his own boss. A very talented writer, Michael penned “The Big Adventure” his battle with the “Beast” better known as cancer. Never giving up on his goal to live to be 100 + he shared his journey, as long as he was able, by posting it to his website, http://thebigadventure.org. Michael’s interests included creating and designing gardens, acting, world affairs, art, finance and volunteering just to name a few. He enjoyed swimming in the Coventry Lake, meeting new people, as well as sharing new experiences with his lifelong friends, but most of all spending time with his family on outings especially “Hot Dog Sundays” and “Pie Day”. He was a member of AARP and the Knights of Columbus, Washington Irving Council 50, Enfield. Michael is survived by his loving mother and father; Carmella and Albert Desrosiers of Enfield, CT, his beloved sister Marie Dumond and husband Philip of Enfield and his stepsister Donna Lee (Desrosiers) Masse of FL. He is also survived by his loving companion Manon Belanger and his best friend Dennis Mobley, both of Windsor, CT who shared many happy times with him throughout the years. In addition he leaves his niece Jaime Dumond and husband Gary Maynard of Enfield; his nephew Michael Dumond of Enfield; his Uncle Robert Young of Florence, MA; Aunts Jean Iacolino of Enfield; Lorraine Iacolino of Agawam, MA and Jean Callahan of FL; along with many wonderful cousins and great friends who will remember him always for his love of life. Michael’s family would like to express their appreciation to the nursing staff at Mt. Sinai Special Care Unit and the Suffield House for the compassionate care they provided Michael during his illness. Relatives and friends may gather with his family during calling hours on Sunday (March 20, 2011) from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels 43 Shaker Rd. Enfield. Funeral services will be held on Monday (March 21, 2011) with the procession forming at 9:00 am to St. Adalbert Church 90 Alden Ave. Enfield for a 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s King Street Cemetery, Enfield. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society 825 Brook St., I-91 Tech Center, Rocky Hill, CT 06067-3045 or The Suffield House 1 Canal Rd.
