Peter "Pete" Doherty, Sr. Obituary

Peter “Pete” Doherty of Enfield died on Monday June 6, 2016, following a short bout with cancer. Pete was born in the mining town of Lochgelly, Scotland, on February 26, 1935. One of eight children, he began his working life in the coal mines of central Fife and was then a dockyard apprentice before serving in the Royal Navy for two years. Never one to let a lack of academic qualifications or previous work experience stand in his way, Pete then worked/bluffed his way up through a variety of engineering jobs in Scotland, England, and Canada before arriving in Enfield in 1967 with his wife, Patricia, and their two children. Pete had a twenty-four year career as an aerospace engineer with Hamilton-Standard, where he mentored many young engineers, a group of whom came to visit him and reminisce shortly before his passing. Pete was also an avid athlete; he began cycling as a young man, and at the age of sixteen rode his bike on a seven-hundred-mile round trip to London. At the age of sixty-five he was still riding and completed a 3,800 mile trip across the U.S. He enjoyed running long before it was fashionable, and ultimately became a two-time Master’s AAU national track champion. He also earned a brown belt in judo and was a hiker, cross-country skier, sailor, and kayaker. A particularly memorable time for him was being involved with his son, Peter, when they restored and raced sports cars. When he wasn’t involved in one sport or another, Pete was a great reader – particularly of military history – and a keen solver of the (London) Times’ challenging crossword puzzle. Pete was “Mr. Fix-it” around the house, although in his later years he would admit to be still “investigating” what had to be done in the time it would have taken the pros to finish the job. One of the great pleasures of his retirement was finally having the time to set up a home woodworking shop, where he produced beautifully-crafted picture frames. Pete also enjoyed traveling with family. Notable trips included taking a freighter to Australia, visiting the Pyramids in Egypt, and rounding Cape Horn on the Queen Mary 2. He often fondly recalled his summers in Ireland with the grandchildren. His friends and family will greatly miss spending time with Pete, particularly listening to him tell his “wee stories” -- most of which contained at least a grain of truth. Pete is survived by Patricia, his wife of fifty-nine years, their son, Peter, daughter Ann, son-in-law John, and grandchildren Ellen, Andrew, and Ian. The family would like to thank all the Masonicare nurses (especially Dina), the staffs of the Smilow Cancer Center and the Hebrew Home Hospital, and Dr. Silvis and his office manager Lisa, for their constant care and attention. The family also appreciates the many kindnesses shown to Pete by his friend, Dick Urian who, assisted by Guinness, kept Pete’s spirits up until the end. (If you drink a beer in Pete’s memory, please make sure it’s a dark one, preferably imported! As his friends were all well aware, Pete loved everything about his adopted home of America except for its beer.) In lieu of flowers, please help someone in need or donate to the Farmington chapter of “Rails to Trails” http://www.fvgreenway.org/pages/support_us.asp or a charity of your choice in Pete’s name. A celebration of his life will be held at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels in Enfield on June 16 from the hours of 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Burial will be private.
