Piedad Liucci Obituary

Piedad Herrera Liucci of Cresskill, NJ passed away on Sunday May9, 2010 at Palisades Medical Center, NJ after a courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. She was born in Quito, Ecuador, South America to the late Laura Delgado and Mayor Manuel Herrera. She received her nursing diploma from the Hospital of Joint Diseases in NYC, NY. She proudly became a United States citizen in 1969. She went on to attend Bergen Community College in Paramus, NJ and received her AS degree in 1990. She delivered compassionate nursing care to patients in the Nursery, Maternity, Psychiatric and Geriatric departments over 56 years. She always gave of herself with a smile and was known as the “Sunshine Nurse”. She participated in walks to Washington, DC for Health Care Reform and increasing the Nurse Patient ratio at the bedside. She enthusiastically attended Nursing Conferences with her daughter Laura. She admired her son James’ ability to rebuild stock racing cars and custom motorcycles. She looked forward to excursions to NYC to see Broadway Shows with her daughter, Nancy and her family. She provided support and encouragement to her husband, Charles in his pursuit of R&D grants. She received the Good Citizen’s Award in the borough of Cresskill, NJ for volunteering her time as a Court Interpreter for Hispanics who could not speak English. She always went the extra mile for people in need, she often accompanied women victims of domestic violence to the hospital and helped them find safe shelter. It’s people like her that make a difference in the lives they touch. She taught Spanish as a volunteer in St. Therese’s School, as well as teaching Ecuadorian and Mexican Folk dance. Her optimism, love and laughter will be greatly missed. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 55 years, Charles A. Liucci, her sister Elvira Londono, her brothers: JorgeE. Herrera, Eudofilo G. Herrera and Alfredo L.Herrera of Quito, Ecuador. She leaves her brothers Julio Herrera of Quito, Ecuador and her brother Victor M Herrera of Barnegat, NJ. She leaves her daughter Laura (and husband Patrick) Fitzgerald of Springfield, MA her daughter Nancy (and husband Danny) Rodriguez of Dumont, NJ, and son James (and wife Jennifer) Liucci of Summerville, SC and her beloved granddaughter Rachel Rodriguez, as well as several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Friday May 14, 2010 from 9 – 10 am at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels in Enfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick’s Church in Enfield at 10:30 am with burial following at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Enfield. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Lung Association, 1301 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC, 20004.
