The Reverend Julian A. Szumilo, CM, died at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT on April 7, 2014. He was 90 years old. Father Juilan was born in Buffalo, NY on January 9, 1924 the son of the late Anthony and Waleria (Kurzynska) Szumilo. He attended St. Cazimir’s parochial school in Buffalo and graduated from South Park High School in 1942. Immediately following high school, he began his studies at Vincentian run Niagara University, Niagara Falls, NY. It was while at Niagara that Father Julian first thought about becoming a priest. He entered the novitiate at St. Vincent Seminary in Philadelphia, PA in September of 1943 and pronounced his perpetual vows on September 12, 1945. He pursued his philosophical and theological studies at Mary Immaculate Seminary, Northhampton, PA. Father Julian was ordained a Vincentian priest on June 3, 1950 and was a priest for nearly 64 years. The Congregation of the Mission – the religious order of Vincentian Priests, was founded by St. Vincent de Paul in Paris in 1625.
His first assignments were as parochial vicar at St. Stanislaus Parish in New Haven, CT from 1950 to 1953 and then at St. Michael’s Parish in Derby, CT from 1953 to 1957. He was then named rector and superior at St. John Kanty Preparatory School in Erie, PA from 1958 to 1961 before returning to St. Michael’s Parish in Derby to serve as parochial vicar and superior.
In 1964 Father Julian was then assigned to St. Vincent’s Mission House in Utica, NY, and spent the next five years conducting parish missions and retreats. Beginning in 1965, he also simultaneously served as an auxiliary chaplain at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY.
In 1969, he was assigned as pastor to St. Stanislaus Parish in New Haven where he remained until 1974. From 1975 until 1981, Father Julian served as Provincial for the New England Province of the Congregation of the Mission. In 1981 he was assigned as parochial vicar at St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish in Brooklyn, NY.
From 1984 to 1987, Father Julian was assigned to St. Vincent’s Mission House in Whitestone, NY. During his assignment, he received his certificate in Clinical Pastoral Education from the Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown, CT. From 1987 to 1993, he was a Catholic Chaplain at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT and for a time, served as the Director of Pastoral Care.
From 1993 to 1994, Father Julian returned to St. Stanislaus in New Haven as parochial vicar before being assigned to Holy Trinity Parish in Lisbon, Maine where he served as parochial vicar until 1999. In 1999 Father Julian was asked to assist at the Vincentian provincial house in Manchester, CT. In 2001, he became chaplain at St. Joseph’s Residence in Enfield, CT; a home for the elderly operated by the Little Sisters of the Poor. He served as chaplain until his retirement in 2009. He continued in residence with the Little Sisters until his death.
Father Julian Szumilo was predeceased by his parents; Anthony and Waleria, and his sisters; Emily Kolber, Eleanor Puchalski and Florentine Wandel. He is survived by his many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

A wake will be held on Friday, April 11th from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at St. Joseph’s Residence 1365 Enfield Street, Enfield, CT 06082-4900. His Funeral Mass will take place there at 10:00 AM on Saturday April 12th. Burial will take place following the funeral mass at 2:00 PM at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Derby, CT.
