Stephen Shlatz Obituary

Following a brief illness, Stephen W. Shlatz, a long-time resident of Enfield, Connecticut, passed away on June 3, 2009 in Crystal River, Florida. Stephen was born on February 7, 1927 on the family farm in Hazardville, Connecticut (now part of Enfield). Stephen joined the Army and served three years in the U.S. and Korea as part of the World War II campaign. He leaves behind three children: Alex of Homasassa Florida; Eugene of Shelburne, Vermont; and Sonya Noveck of Farmington, Connecticut.

Stephen is survived by two sisters, Helen Dobitsky of Enfield, Connecticut and Mary Schultski of West Springfield, Massachusetts. He was predeceased by brothers Myron, Walter, Ellery and Alex. He was predeceased by mother Katherine in 1977 and father John in 1941; and his long-time companion, Josephine (May) Monge in 2008. He also leaves behind 5 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Stephen was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving previously as VFW Commander.

Following the Army, Stephen returned to Connecticut and apprenticed as a machinist, a trade from which he took great pride and plied successfully to the day he retired. He married Louise Saucelin (deceased in 2006) and built a home in Enfield, where he lived until April 2009. Unable to maintain the home and pastoral setting he cherished, Stephen moved to Florida to be closer to family.

Stephen loved to travel and was able to visit Poland and the Ukraine from which his parents fled just prior to the Russian Revolution. He also traveled to Ireland and many states through the U.S. He was fond of horses and frequented race tracks throughout the U.S., including a trip to the Kentucky Derby. He enjoyed being near water and relished visits to Vermont and boating with family on Lake Champlain. He enjoyed cars and delighted in driving his "Caddy."

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00pm on June 9 at Browne Funeral Chapels in Enfield. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday morning 10:00 am at Browne Funeral Chapels and Burial in the Hazardville Cemetery, in Enfield.
