Richard C. “Rich” Lukas, aka (Lukasiewski), 76, of Glastonbury, loving husband to Christine (Kusiak) Lukas, peacefully passed away Tuesday, 7/26/2016 at home. Rich was born in Scranton, PA on April 21, 1940, son of Frank S. and Helen J. (McKowski) Lukas. The family moved to Rockville in 1941, he attended the Rockville school system, graduating from Rockville High School in 1957. On July 4, 1957, Rich enlisted in the US Navy. He did his basic training at the US Naval Training Center, Bainbridge, MD, continuing on with submarine school at the Groton Submarine Base, New London. Rich qualified on submarines aboard the USS Barracuda SS K-1; was a Plank Owner on the USS Scorpion SSN 589, in addition to serving aboard the USS Redfin SS 272, on many deployments over a six year period. He received the Good Conduct, National Defense and Navy Unit Citation Commendation Service Medals. He also received a Commanding Officer Letter of Commendation for the extra attention he gave to his shipmates and Officers for assisting them in their qualification requirements aboard the Scorpion. Rich was honorably discharged from active duty on August 27, 1967, holding the rank of EN1 SS. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he began his civilian career at Combustion Engineering in Windsor and years later was employed by SNET as a Building Maintenance Manager. During 1971 and 1972, Rich attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham, studying Accelerated Building Engineering. In 1995 he retired from SNET and went on to work as an Installation Manager for a local fire alarm and security company, retiring in 2007. During his younger years, Rich enjoyed many outdoor activities, boating, hunting and golf and was an avid reader. In addition, he was a Life Member of the USSVI and Holland Clubs. Along with his wife Christine, Rich is survived by a son Steven B. and Corina Lukas, of MA; a step daughter, Abby Lawton Claxton (Rick Claxton), of Wallingford; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends and relatives at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 50 Naubuc Ave., Glastonbury, (day, date) from 5-7pm, with a memorial service at 7pm in the funeral home.
