Obituary for Albert J. DeLuca

Albert Joseph DeLuca age 85 of Milford, husband of Cynthia Wolfe DeLuca, passed away on May 26, 2012 surrounded by his family after a long illness. Born on December 12, 1926, he was the son of the late Peter and Carmella DeLuca of Trumbull. Albert is survived by his nine children: Libby Miniaci, Suzan DeLuca, Albert J. DeLuca, Mary DeLuca (Scott), David DeLuca, Laurel Elliott (Michael), Lisa Stone (Christopher), Lynn Maietto (Louis) and Christopher DeLuca (Amy). Also surviving are fifteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Linda Sartin and his grandson Troy Dessenberg.Al was a truck driver for over 40 years, and worked for McGladrey & Pullen in accounting for 15 years. An active member of the Teamsters Local 191, Al served as President of the Teamsters Retirees Chapter, Local 191 for ten years. He also formed the Connecticut Coalition of Retired Teamsters, comprised of Locals 191, 443, 671 and 1150. Al was a U.S. Navy Veteran, proudly serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations during WWII aboard the U.S.S. Cook. He was a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion. In the V.F.W. he served as Post, County, and District Commander. Al served for ten years as an Alderman for the Fifth District in Milford and was the Minority Chairman of the Board of Aldermen. As an Alderman he was responsible for bringing to Milford the SHARE/HARVEST food program. He also headed up the committee responsible for bringing the Telephone Emergency Alert Notification System to Milford. Al enjoyed playing golf and had a passion for books, especially poetry. He enjoyed playing his guitar and singing with the Calvary Alliance Trio. He was a dedicated member of the Calvary Alliance Church, where he served as a Deacon. The family would like to express sincere thanks to the wonderful staff at Gardner Heights nursing home for all the support and care they showed to Al and his family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Alliance Church or the Ahrens Program at the Milford Senior Center.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 2 at 11:00 AM at the Calvary Alliance Church, 273 Orange Ave, Milford. Interment will be private. Smith & Sefcik Funeral Home, 135 Broad St, Milford is handling the arrangements.
