Barbara Blanchard Adams, age 83, of Orange, passed away in Yale New Haven Hospital on Sunday, July 6, 2008. She was born on October 18, 1924, in Holyoke, MA to the late Gordon and Esther Congdon Blanchard. She was a graduate of Scarsdale High School and Katherine Gibbs School in New York City. A long-standing active member of the Orange community, she had been employed at Yale University from 1970 to 1991, briefly at the Yale Drama School, then from 1971 onward as the Registrar in the Department of the History of Art. She was one of the founders of the Orange Community Nursery School, a long-time supporter of and fundraiser for the Case Memorial Library in Orange, a former member of the Orange Land Trust and a member of the Junior League. In 2000, she received a certificate of recognition for outstanding and dedicated service to “Round the World Women and the International Center of New Haven”, an organization for the support of international students and spouses attending Yale University. Mrs. Adams is survived by her grandchildren Donald, James, Elizabeth, Christine and Sabrina, sister-in-law Jean (Mrs. Denison) Blanchard, nephews David Blanchard, Daniel G. Blanchard and wife Sharon, William B. Blanchard and wife Mary, niece Angel Rice Ortloff and husband Paul, grandnieces Laurie Blanchard, Tasha Ortloff Peterson and Sara Ortloff Khoury and her husband Michael, and great-grand nieces and nephews Jasmine and Dylan Petersen and twins Ruby and Devon Khoury. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her devoted husband Donald Hurlbert Adams, son Steven Blanchard Adams, sister Carol Blanchard Rice and brothers Denison and Gordon Blanchard. She will be remembered by a host of loving friends who have especially supported Barbara since the passing of her beloved husband Don Adams in the spring of this year. All funeral services are private and are being handled by the Smith & Sefcik Funeral Home, 135 Broad St., Milford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Case Memorial Library, 176 Tyler City Rd., Orange, CT. 06477.
