Bessie M. (Betty) Hickman, age 87, of Milford went home to be with The Lord peacefully August 3, 2016. Betty was born on February 6, 1929, the daughter of the late Beatrice (Helen) and Ralph Cheesman in Bridgeton, NJ. She was the wife, of 58 years, to Leonard C. Hickman and mother to her two children: Paul (Debra Frates) Hickman and Betsy (Paul Richards) Hulse. Betty was deeply involved in her church, the Mary Taylor United Methodist, where she served in many capacities over the years. She was a member of the Methodist Women’s’ Society, Club 80, New Member Secretary and organized the Greeters for Sunday worship services. She also loved making her funnel cakes at the annual church Arts and Crafts Fair. In addition to her husband and children, she leaves behind nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and seven nieces and nephews. Beside her parents, she is predeceased by her brother Lawrence Cheesman and sister Hazel Giacomelli. Calling hours are Friday, August 5, 2016 from 5pm to 7pm at the Smith Funeral Home, 135 N Broad St., Milford. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 7pm. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Mary Taylor United Methodist Church, 176 S Broad ST. Milford, CT 06460.
