Carol Vitelli Obituary

Carol Ann (Peterson) Vitelli, wife of former Milford School Superintendent George T. Vitelli, she passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on May 29, 2009. Carol was born and raised in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the only child of Carl and Anna (Anderson) Peterson. She attended Harding High School and the University of Connecticut where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in music education and was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority. As a nationally-ranked collegian, she was a member of the UConn National Championship Archery Team. Her passion for the sport was subsequently shared with children as an archery instructor with the Milford Recreation Department. Carol was a career educator teaching primarily music in the Plainville, Stratford and Milford school systems. She was an accomplished pianist and piano instructor and an avid swimmer who worked as a lifeguard and gave swimming lessons. Carol was also very active in community activities including working with the Visiting Nurses Association, Milford Community Concerts, the League of Women’s Voters, the Voter Registration Board, and the United Way. She served God as the choir director for the Baptist Temple, formerly located in Bridgeport, and later as an assistant choir director at the Grace Baptist Church in Milford. She possessed an extraordinary voice and enjoyed performing regularly as a vocal soloist in both churches. But the thing she enjoyed most in life was her family. As a devoted wife and mother she spent a good portion of her life raising her four sons. Carol embraced life. With a broad smile and her bright blue eyes, she could be found racing through the countryside in convertibles, ice skating on ponds, clamming in Long Island Sound, picking more blueberries than her freezer could hold, lobster bakes, sunbathing, swimming in the ocean, body surfing in heavy surf, and riding on snowmobiles and roller coasters. She enjoyed long walks in the woods of Southern Vermont, cheap Italian wine, sharp Vermont cheddar cheese, pure Vermont maple syrup, puzzles, knitting Nordic sweaters, tailgate parties, cooking holiday meals, watching golf and UConn Women’s basketball, and traveling around the world. She leaves behind four sons, George and his wife Diane (Germantown, MD), James and his wife Kristi (Glastonbury, CT), William and his wife Theresa (Milford, CT) and Edward (Hollywood, FL), as well as six grandchildren, Daniel, Taylor, Sara, Michelle, William and Gabriella Vitelli. Friends are invited to attend the funeral on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at 10:00 am in the Smith & Sefcik Funeral Home, 135 Broad Street, Milford, CT. Friends may call on Monday, June 1, 2009 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Carol’s name to either the American Cancer Society or the American Red Cross.
