Cyril Barrton (Bart) Whittaker, age 80, of Milford, beloved husband of Linda Lewis Peterson Whittaker, passed away on Monday, July 25, 2016 at CT Hospice in Branford. Born in New Haven on December 5, 1935, he was the son of the late Cyril and Erma Whittaker. Bart proudly served in the U. S. Coast Guard during the Korean War. He was a math and science teacher in AZ for many years. After returning to CT, he worked in the Human Resources Division of the State of CT in Bridgeport. Bart is survived by his daughter, Twyla Whittaker Hughes of Los Gatos, CA, his son, Timothy Whittaker of Glendale, AZ, and Linda's daughter, Tami Peterson Jackson. He is also survived by his brothers, Paul Whittaker of Orange and Wally (Peg) Whittaker of AZ, and his sister Nancy Whittaker (Jim) Connors of Orange, and his 10 grandchildren. Bart has struggled with clinical depression since the 1950’s and Frontotemporal Dementia during his last nine years. During the early years when people with brain imbalances were not treated with the dignity they deserved, he was, nevertheless, bravely open and honest with trying to help other people understand the disease. In the hopes of helping to find a cure for dementia and other mental illnesses, his brain has been donated to the Pathology Dept. at Yale New Haven Hospital for research. Therefore, please, in lieu of flowers, it is the wish of the family that donations be made in Bart's memory to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, Radnor Station Building #2, 290 King of Prussia Rd., Radnor, PA19087. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 28 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Smith Funeral Home, 135 Broad St., Milford. A memorial service, celebrating his life, will be at the First United Church of Christ, Congregational, 34 West Main St., Milford on Friday, July 29 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private.
