Enid Clay Obituary

Enid Wharton Clay passed away peacefully on July 10, 2009, surrounded by her family. A resident of Milford for 57 years, she was born in New Haven on March 31, 1924, to James Russell Wharton and Anna Gesner Wharton of Hamden. Her parents and a sister, Doris Wharton Skelton, of Lexington, MA, predeceased her. Mrs. Clay is survived by her adoring husband, Eugene Bouton Clay, with whom she celebrated sixty years of marriage on July 2. She leaves four loving children, Carol Clay (Prescott) Wiske of New Haven; Eugene Jr. “Chip” (Barbara) of Fairport, NY; Thomas (Sarah Peacock) of Cohasset, MA; and Katharine Clay (John Wareham) of Middletown. She was the devoted grandmother of ten grandchildren: Clay and Alexander Wiske of New Haven; Eugene III, Michael, and Shaylin Clay of Fairport; John and Lucy Clay of Cohasset; and Hannah, Maxwell, and Phoebe Wareham of Middletown. Enid also leaves behind her loyal English Springer Spaniel, Traveler. After attending the University of North Carolina and interning at Smith College, Enid received her undergraduate degree from New Haven Teachers College (now SCSU). While working full time and raising her four young children with Eugene, Enid earned her master’s degree. As an elementary school teacher in the Milford Public School system for 20 years, she taught hundreds of children to read. She was an accomplished classical pianist and an avid reader with a keen interest in politics. Hearing impaired since the age of four, she became a skillful lip reader. Enid was never happier than when vacationing with her children and grandchildren in Cape Cod, Nantucket, New Hampshire, and in Sherburne, New York; and on holidays when the family gathered together to laugh, reminisce, and create new memories. She and Eugene also enjoyed several trips overseas over the years. Calling hours are Friday, July 17, from 5 to 7 pm at the Smith & Sefcik Funeral Home, 135 Broad Street, Milford (www.georgejsmithandson.com). A celebration of Enid’s life will be held Saturday, July 18, at 10 am at the First United Church of Christ, Congregational in Milford. Friends and family are invited to attend both events. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in her name to the Memorial Fund of the First United Church of Christ, Congregational, 34 West Main Street, Milford, CT 06460-3389. The family thanks the staffs of Milford Hospital and Gaylord Hospital for all their care and kindness during Enid’s illness.
