James Smith Obituary

James Glenn Smith, 69, of Milford, passed away peacefully, in Yale New Haven Hospital, surrounded by loved ones, on November 8th 2008. Son of the late William and Arlene (Munson) Smith, he was born on May 5th1939 in Milford. After graduating from Milford High School, Mr. Smith entered the United States Army and quickly rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Military Police Corps. He was very proud to have been selected as SHAPE NCO of the Year in 1963. After leaving the Army, Mr. Smith joined the Milford Fire Department and worked there for 24 years until retiring in 1989 at the rank of Captain. Captain Smith was a Fellow of the National Fire Academy and a state certified fire instructor. He was commended by the Board of Fire Commissioners in 1966 and 1983 and by the Board of Police Commissioners in 1978. He distinguished himself by rescuing a person who had fallen through the ice in 1967, assisting an injured woman in 1976, and in two particular building fires in 1987. After retirement, Mr. Smith kept busy working for the Judicial Branch of Connecticut state government. He was also a representative for the Connecticut Lottery. Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife, of 35 years, Janet (DiPalma) Smith, his daughter, Karen Malota of Beacon Falls, and sons Mark of Hartford, Gregory of Milford, and William of Bensalem, PA. Mr. Smith is also survived by four grandchildren, Daniel Smith, Matt Smith, Brian Malota, Jr. and Elyssa Malota and a brother John and sister Marjorie. Mr. Smith will be particularly remembered for the great care and love he showed to his handicapped son, Mark, throughout his life. There are no calling hours. Friends and family are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 in St. Gabriel Church, Broadway, Milford at 10:30am. Interment will follow in Kings Highway Cemetery.
