Lawrence King Obituary

Lawrence King, an Emmy award winning set designer, died on Wednesday at his home in Milford, CT after a long battle with cancer. He was 65. He designed "As the World Turns" for 13 years and was awarded a Daytime Emmy for his work in 1990. He left the show in 1995 to work full time with set designer and life partner, Michael Yeargan, on many plays on Broadway (The Light in the Piazza, South Pacific, Awake and Sing, Joe Turner's Come and Gone) and operas at the Met and in Europe. Raised in Wichita, Kansas, as a teenager, he became known for his puppetry work on the local television station, KAKE, and was active in the community theater. He attended Wichita State University and was a classmate of renowned opera bass Samuel Ramey. Upon graduation, he was accepted into the Yale School of Drama as a set and costume designer. While a student, he designed the first production (The Rivals, directed by Alvin Epstein) of the Yale Repertory Theatre in its current space, a renovated church, on Chapel Street. After Yale, he designed many productions for the Hartford Stage Company and co-designed many shows (Bad Habits, The Ritz) and operas with Mr. Yeargan before joining As The World Turns. He is survived by his life partner of 40 years, Michael Yeargan. A private memorial gathering is pending and, in lieu of flowers, donations are requested to go to the American Cancer Society
