Lawrence Shields Obituary

Lawrence Joseph Shields, age 79, of Milford, passed away on Friday, May 25, 2007, in Yale New Haven Hospital. He was born on August 29, 1927, in West Haven to the late George and Anna Lavigne Shields. Before retiring, he was employed by Swift & Co as a manager and advance to supervisor, representing them in Chicago, Buffalo, New Jersey and all places involved in the Master Agreement. After the plant closed in New Haven, he went to Carnie, NJ and later to Rochelle, IL. He settled with Roessler as a supervisor for the Table Ready Meat Dept., later working with his buddy Walt Anderson and retired from Automatic Milk as a supervisor and Route person. He was active in the union as an order clerk, then Union Steward and progressing to President of the Local United Packing House of America CIOAFL. He represented Sperry & Barnes, Swift & Co., Roessler Inc. and organized plants for Cheeseborough Pond. An active member of the community, he served as an usher and Grounds Chairman and was on the Vestry Committee for St. Peter’s Church. Also serving as President for the Men’s Club at the Milford Seniors Center and was one of the Tatta Tappers. Along with his membership at the New Haven Lions Club, where he was Past President, 2nd Vice President, Zone Chairman, Regional Chairman, receiving the Knights of the Blind Award in 2000, co-chairman for the One-On-One Program, a board member, Sergeant of Arms at the Mid Winter Convention in 2001. He also was on the property maintenance Board at Camp Cedarcrest. Mr. Shields is survived by his loving wife, of 29 years, Sue Kelly Shields, devoted children Lawrence Shields of Florida, Nancy Shields Consiglio of North Haven, Thomas Shields of Branford, Edward Shields and his wife Mary of East Haven and Lisa Kelly of Durham, grandchildren Marissa and Jenna Consiglio, Adam, Kevin and Alex Shields, sister Dorothy Griffith, sisters-in-law Ann, Lois and Mary Shields, Ginger Burrows, Lois, Ann and Patricia Kelly, brother-in-law Raymond Burrows and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers Randall, John, Robert, Joseph, Bertile ,William Shields and son in law John Paul Consiglio Sr. Calling hours are Monday, May 28, 2007, from 4 to 8pm at the Smith Funeral Home, 135 Broad St., Milford. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 29th at 10am, at St. Peter’s Church. Interment will be private. Donations may be made to the Lions Club of New Haven, Chartable Trust, P. O.
