Michael Sopchak, Jr.

Michael Sopchak Jr., of Milford, passed away on Saturday, August 25, 2007, in the West Haven Veteran's Hospital. He was born on September 25, 1917, to the late Michael and Veronica Varholy Sopchak Sr. in Bridgeport. He proudly served in the US Army from April 10, 1942 to December 13, 1945, serving in the Northern Solomons Campaign on Guadalcanal. Before retiring, he was employed by the Sun Oil Company in Bridgeport for 27 years. An active member of the community, he was a writer for the Milford Citizen, a volunteer for the American Red Cross, a member of the Milford Senior Center, and the VFW in Stratford. He was also a parishioner at St. John the Baptist Church on Mill Hill Ave. in Bridgeport. Mr. Sopchak is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Julia Schrillo Sopchak, devoted sons Michael Sopchak III (Patricia) of Northford, John C. Sopchak Sr. (Katherine) of Milford, James S. Sopchak of Jacksonville, FL and William R. Sopchak (Wendy) of Brookfield, sister Florence Sullivan of Milford, grandchildren John C. Jr., Emily K. , Michael R. IV and Julie M. Sopchak. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his brother Stephen Sopchak and sisters Ann Mikulak and Helen Stanziola. Calling hours are Thursday, August 30, 2007, from 4 to 7pm at the Smith and Sefcik Funeral Home, 135 Broad St., Milford. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, August 31st at 10am. Interment will follow in St. John's Cemetery in Stratford.
