Richard Blake Obituary

Richard Franklin Blake, age 92, of Milford, died Sunday, January 23, 2011 at Milford Hospital. He was born on November 9, 1918 in Arcadia, Florida to the late Joseph and Bessie Schuman Blake. He grew up a farm boy in Southville, MA; earned a BA in Chemistry from Mass State (UMASS), an MA in education from Boston University, and a degree in administration from Fairfield University. For over thirty five years he was a Science teacher, department head and assistant superintendent for the Stratford Public Schools. He served as president for the CT Science Teachers Assoc. and was the founder of the CT Counsel of Science Education. An active volunteer in the community, he was a member of the Appalachian Trail Club, CT Forest and Parks, Housatonic Valley Authority and the United Presbyterian Church. In retirement, Dick’s volunteer work with the ATC earned state and national awards. Travel, gardening and enjoying his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were some of his favorite pastimes. Mr. Blake is survived by his son, Bruce F. Blake and wife, Anne of Milford; grandchildren: Benjamin Blake and wife, Sandra Smith of Milford; Marin Blake and husband, Max Barry of Chicago; Theodore Blake of Medford, MA; great grandchildren, Carter Franklin Blake and Calliope Anne Barry; and son-in-law, Gordon DesBrisay. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Alice Gill Blake, daughter Susan Blake and sister Eleanor Lutz. Calling hours are Saturday, January 29, 2011 from 12 to 2pm at the Smith & Sefcik Funeral Home, 135 Broad St., Milford and a brief service will be held at 2pm. Interment will be private.
