Sally Stowe Clemence, a resident of Mariner Sands in Stuart Florida, passed away at her sister’s home in Milford, CT on August 31, 2019. She was the widow of Robert T. Clemence who passed away in 1997. Sally was born in Milford, CT on March 5, 1924, the daughter of the late Cornelius Ard Stowe and Sarah Platt Stowe. She was a graduate of Milford High School in 1941 and Edgewood Park Junior College, NY in 1942. Her first position was with R.L Day in 1950 in Hartford as a registered representative and analyst in bank stocks & municipal bonds. In 1962 she joined Harry Keefe, Gene Bruyette and Herbert Woods in forming Keefe, Bruyette & Woods, Inc., serving as director and secretary. In 1967 she was elected treasurer, 1972 senior vice president, and 1979 executive vice president & chief financial officer. She also served as treasurer, secretary and director of Keefe Management Services. After her retirement from KBW in 1991, she and Bob traveled all over the world with friends from Mariner Sands. They visited most every state in the United States, many countries in Europe, the Pacific Islands, the North Pole and then on to an African safari. She made Florida her residence where she enjoyed the climate and her passion for golf. The main reason she spent so much of her time at Mariner Sands was because of the two 18-hole courses there. She did not, however, lose her admiration for the city of Milford where she spent time in her home when not traveling. For over 75 years, she has financially and actively been a supporter of The First Church of Christ Congregational. She was also a member and past treasurer of the Chapel at Mariner Sands in Stuart, Florida. She was on the Board of Corporations of the Milford Savings Bank and a 50+ year member and former financial secretary of the Freelove Baldwin Stow Chapter DAR. She was also on the Board of Directors of the Milford Hospital for many years. She was formerly a member of The Women’s Bond Club of New York, The Municipal Bond Women’s Club of New York and The New York Society of Security Analyst. She was named by Business Week in 1976 as one of the 100 Top Corporate Women. She firmly believed in her freedom to be a peer in a man’s world long before women’s rights became a popular theme. Sally was most generous in her contributions to many charitable organizations. Among others, she set up a Sally Stowe Trust Fund at both her church and the Milford Hospital. Sally was passionate about education. She was instrumental in seeing that the many children in her family attended private high school, to most recently, financing the higher education of her grand nieces and nephews. Sally is survived by her sister, Joan Stowe, of Milford, sister and brother-in-law, Norma Platt Stowe Jaques and husband William F. Jaques II of Sun City Center, Florida, five nephews: William Jaques III (wife, Cynthia) of Milford, Stephen Stowe Jaques of Stratford, David Jaques (wife ,Francine) of Goldens Bridge, NY, John Jaques (wife, Audra) of Orange, Paul Jaques (wife, Sabrina) of Darien. Also survived by grand nieces and nephews namely, Jeffrey Jaques, Jennifer Salgado, Sandra Petrini, Stephen and Matthew Jaques, Justin and Juliet Jaques, Miles, Daniel and Robert Jaques, Emma and Sarah Jaques, and five great grand nieces and nephews. All of whom loved her dearly. She lived as she wished; as she said “I did it my way”. She had a wonderful life; no regrets. She would like to thank the unwavering devotion of her caretakers Deborah Saksen of New York and Lisa Hayes of New York during her last years. She is especially grateful to William, Paul and Sabrina for their generous and constant support of her every want and their availability at all times. But words cannot express the unconditional love and devotion of her sister, Joan, to whom Sally will always be indebted. Not a day went by that Sally did not ask for her sister Joan. There will be no calling hours at the funeral parlor. A memorial service is planned for 11:00 am on Saturday, September 7th, 2019 at the First United Church of Christ Congregational, 34 West Main St., Milford. Interment will follow at the family plot at Milford Cemetery. The Smith Funeral Home, 135 Broad St., Milford is in charge of funeral arrangements. As we reflect on Sally’s career it is abundantly clear that what is symbolic to the eagle is in life fittingly descriptive of Sally. Courage: She has demonstrated she had the courage to be all that she could be. Freedom: She firmly believed in her freedom to be a peer in a man’s world long before women’s rights became a popular theme. Service: From Milford High to Edgewood Park Junior College to the Milford Trust Company to The Securities Business with R.L. Day & Co. on June 12, 1950. Tonight Sally celebrates precisely 39-1/2 years in the securities industry. Twenty seven and one-half of those years in dedicated service to K B & W. For proper perspective please be aware that 82 of the 110 employees of K B & W are less than thirty nine and one-half years of age. We all know Sally’s service to K B & W has been demonstrated in countless ways. Of greatest impact and import are her significant contributions to the establishment and preservation of our corporate ethic. Less well known is her equal devotion and sensitivity to the joys and sorrows that have impacted the lives of our employees and their families. Sally’s principle of fairness with her fellow employees is best told by her actions when this company was formed. Nobby Woods had neither the capital nor credit to buy founder’s shares. Sally prevailed on her Dad to lend Nobby his stake so that he could own his fair share. Her service extends well beyond this company. For many years she has financially and personally been an active supporter of her church, The Milford Hospital, the D.A.R. and a Director of The Milford Savings Bank. Achievement: Early on Sally became an accomplished Bank Stock researcher. The charts you now do by computer she did with quill pen and India Ink. As her responsibilities grew she grew from informed to knowledgeable to truly expert in such diverse fields as Corporate and Personal Taxes, Life Insurance, Health Insurance and Employee Benefit Plans. She was the first woman ever to be a director of a New York Stock Exchange Member Firm. Did she become all that she could be—Ah yes, and then some. Splendor: Because of her actions, her bearing, her dress and her baubles she is addressed and referred to as “Miss Stowe”, a title well earned, for by any measure she is a special, splendid lady. Tonight we recall and salute the service, achievement, courage, freedom and splendor of a distinguished career but more importantly we seize this moment to say we love you, Sally Stowe Clemence, and to thank you for being our friend.
