Lillian Elaine Rosenblatt Naugatuck, Connecticut Obituary

Lillian Elaine Rosenblatt

NAUGATUCK - Lillian Rosenblatt, widow of William Rosenblatt, died Saturday at her home in the loving presence of her children. She was born Lillian Elaine Mendelsohn on March 13, 1918, in New Haven, the youngest child of Sarah and Max Mendelsohn. She had seven older siblings who adored and helped raise her by correcting her grammar, laughing at her jokes, and taking her on long, often impromptu, road trips to Montreal, Saratoga Springs or New York City "if someone wanted ice cream." Lil had many family stories and those lucky enough to hear them fell under the spell of Lil Rosenblatt. She spoke with warmth and charm, compassion and humor- qualities which served her well both as a medical assistant and later as the head women's buyer and saleswoman at Rosenblatt's Department Store, where for 30 years she worked with her husband, Bill. "A transplanted New Havener," she embraced her life in Naugatuck through her involvement with The Women's Club, where she spearheaded a civic beautification effort in the 1960s. She was also a long-standing member of the Naugatuck Women's Study Club, where she researched, wrote and presented 30 papers, among them: The Meaning of Dreams, The History of Salt, Florence Griswold and the American impressionists. She loved to garden; she loved to read; she loved dogs, birds, trees, elephants, dolphins, and the UCONN women's basketball team. Above all, she loved her children and grandchildren. She leaves behind her sons, Howard Rosenblatt and his wife, Julie, of Naugatuck, Steven Rosenblatt and his wife, Susan, of Prospect; and daughter, Sari Rosenblatt and her husband, Steve Machuga, of Middletown. She also leaves three grandchildren, Jennifer Gampel and her husband, Josh, of Seymour, and Nora Machuga and Anne Machuga, both of Middletown. In addition, she leaves two brothers-in-law in Florida, Sidney and Elton Rosenblatt, and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Lil's wonderful Naugatuck doctors: Ralph Tremaglio, Robert Matusz and Philip Rothfeld. In addition, we are grateful for the kindness and superior services provided by the Naugatuck Visiting Nurse Association and the Waterbury Visiting Nurse Association "Hope Team." Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 8, 2010, at the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave., Naugatuck. Burial will be in Brass City Lodge Cemetery, Waterbury. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Naugatuck/Beacon Falls Campership Fund, P.O. Box 370, c/o Kathy Lengyel, Naugatuck 06770. For more information and online condolences, please log on to www.buckmillerbrothers.com.
