Naugatuck _ Mrs. Winifred "Winnie" (Hayden) Nardello, age 96, of 516 South Main St., died Saturday January 31,2020 at Waterbury Hospital. She was the widow of James Nardello.


Mrs. Nardello was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 22,1913 a daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Rogers) (Krauss) Hayden. Her family moved to Beacon Falls in 1921. She attended Center School in Beacon Falls and Naugatuck High School and was retired from Peter Paul in Naugatuck where she worked for 28 years. She was a Charter member and communicant of St. Vincent Ferrer Church in Naugatuck where she served on the Church Council and building committee during the construction of the church, chaired a food booth at the Annual Summer Fair from its inception until the time of her illness and was a member of the Ladies Guild. Winnie was a very loving, kind and generous person who truly enjoyed helping others. She was a volunteer in the Dietary Department at Waterbury Hospital for 15 years and served as a chairlady of canteen for the Naugatuck Chapter of the Red Cross, preparing and serving refreshments for blood mobiles in Naugatuck and Beacon Falls for 25 years. She was a member of the Naugatuck Chapter #495 of the AARP - Publicity Chairlady for 10 years, a member of the Trip and Tour Committee of the AARP #495 for 10 years and a member of the special events committee for the Red Cross. She was recognized many times throughout her life having been the recipient of several awards including, 1984 Naugatuck Citizen of the Year, the prestigious Clara Barton Award for service to the American Red Cross in 1993, the Beacon Valley Grange Volunteer of the Year, the American Red Cross Blood Services Volunteer of the Year Award in 1999 and in 2006 was a recipient of the Archdiocesan Medal of Appreciation presented at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Hartford.


Mrs. Nardello is survived by two daughters: Lynn O'Halloran of Clinton and Judy SanAngelo of Naugatuck, 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister: Florence Steeves and two brothers: Frank Hayden and Roger Hayden.


The funeral will be held on Wednesday February 3,2010 at 9:15 a.m from the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home 82 Fairview Ave. Naugatuck to St. Vincent Ferrer Church 1006 New Haven Rd. Naugatuck for a mass at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery in Naugatuck. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday February 2,2010 from 5 to 7 p.m.
