He was the husband of the late Nancy (Markoya) Melkonian. Walter was born on August 8, 1927 in Bridgeport CT the son of the late Akribas and Mathilde (Tossoun) Melkonian. He was educated in Bridgeport School System. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II in the Counter Intelligence Unit headquartered in the European Theater. After honorable discharge, Walter earned his Bachelors Degree from the University of Bridgeport and began his career at Avco Lycoming in Stratford. Later, for over 42 years, he worked at Winchester Electronics in Oakville, where he was officially Materials Manager but where he also served as part of the Sales and Purchasing departments and was well respected for his knowledge of their product lines and meeting customer product specs. He retired in 2001 at age 73. Walter loved to sing. His beautiful voice could be heard harmonizing with Nancy at home and later ringing through the hallways at his homes. He delighted in all of his grandchildren’s sporting events and musical productions. He was always ready to discuss sports and his love of baseball ranged from his Harding High School days to his years coaching and later umpiring youth leagues. Walter could often be found gardening and taking care of his home. But most of all he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know and love him. Left to honor his memory and cherish his love and legacy are his children; sons, Michael and his wife, Cheryl of Wallingford and David and his wife, Darlene of Damascus MD, daughters; Cheryl Baumgartel of Southbury and Monica Mrosek of Simsbury.
