George Barton Obituary

George H. Barton, 90, of Manchester, formerly of Rockville, beloved husband of the late Lois (Weber) Barton, passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2013. He was born March 28, 1923 in Hartford, son of the late Henry and Henrietta (Smith) Barton. He graduated from Hall High School in West Hartford, in 1941. At the age of 19, he joined the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served as part of the 4th Marine Division and was wounded in action on Saipan. He earned the Purple Heart for his bravery. Following military service, George attended Colgate University, where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1949. He had a life-long career as a Life Insurance agent for Mass Mutual Insurance. He was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan, and regularly attended Colgate University sporting events. He is survived by his children Thomas N. Barton and his wife Mary Beth of MA and Anne B. James and her husband Paul of WA as well as five grandchildren: Kyle James, Ryan Barton, David Barton, Jonathan Barton and Kelsey Barton. He was predeceased by John C. Barton, Elizabeth Fisher, Shirley Anderson, and Virginia Killam. A memorial service will be held at the Ellington Congregational Church, 72 Main Street, Ellington, CT at 1 PM on Saturday, January 11, 2014. Burial will be held in the spring at Townsend Cemetery, Andover.
