Maxine Jones Obituary

Maxine (Smith) Jones, died on August 20, 2014 with family and friends by her side at her home at Welles Country Village in Vernon CT. Mackie, who celebrated her 100th birthday earlier this year, was born February 16, 1914 in Winchester, NH to Ruth and Arthur Smith. She was predeceased by her husband, William, in 1998, and son, Bruce E. Jones, in 2011. Mackie is survived by her beloved family: Jeralyn Hankinson, daughter, and husband, Bill, of Tolland CT; Ginny Jones,daughter–in-law, of Tully MA; grandchildren who were very dear to her: Missy Reynolds, and husband, Scott; Peter Jones, and wife, Melis; Christopher Hankinson, Sarah Hankens and husband, Jeff. Also, her great-grandchildren whom she adored: Patrick, Madeline, and Cameron Reynolds; Lexy and Zoe Jones; and Abraham and Josephine Hankens. Mackie was born in Winchester, NH where she attended public schools, then Keene Normal School. She married Bill Jones and they raised their family in Winchester. She was a lifelong member of the United Church of Winchester, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Ladies’ Oriental Shrine. Since resettling in Tolland, the United Congregational Church had welcomed her into its church family. Mackie and Bill enjoyed twenty-seven years in Florida after retirement. They were grateful to have made many friends in Inverness. Sadly, she gave up golfing at the age of 91, and in 2007 returned to New England to be closer to her family. During that time she especially enjoyed becoming better acquainted with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Everyone at Welles Country Village and, before that, Winding River Village, made Mackie’s time there special, for which the family’s eternally grateful. The staff and caregivers were exceptional. The kindness dear Sophie showed her during the past few months was especially appreciated. Mackie was a sweet, independent, gentle, but spunky, centenarian who was loved by many. She ended her journey with dignity and grace. A Memorial Service will be held at the United Church of Winchester (NH) at 11:00 am on October 17. Those who wish may donate in memory of Mackie to the Bruce E. Jones Scholarship Fund, PO 298 Orange, MA 01364, or Hospice and Palliative Care, 8 Keynote Drive, Vernon CT 06066.
