Evelyn Sackett (Sydnor) Kubas, 78, of Canton, beloved wife of David Raymond Kubas died, surrounded by family, Thursday, October 10, 2019 at John Dempsey Hospital. She was born December 2, 1940 in Richmond, VA, daughter of the late Dr. James Rawlings Sydnor and Margaret Wylie Sydnor. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, VA, Class of 1959 and VA Commonwealth University, Class of 1963, earning her BS in Occupational Therapy. Having been an Occupational Therapist for 42 years, Evelyn was Assistant Director and Student Director of Occupational Therapy at the Newington Children’s Hospital from 1964-1970; Director of Occupational Therapy at Hartford Hospital from 1971-1976; was with the Farmington Valley VNA from 1976-1986 and the Torrington school system from 1986-1995; was with Genesis Rehabilitation Services as Program Manager of Rehabilitation Services at Hughes Health and Rehabilitation in West Hartford from 1995-2006. Ev was a member of St. Patrick Church in Collinsville, A 45 year member of the League of Women Voters of Canton, 7 years as President; the Cherry Brook Garden Club; Canton Book Club; Canton Commission on Aging, Canton Center Historic District Commission; PTO in Canton Public Schools and was a volunteer for the Canton Food Bank. As a tireless volunteer, Ev’s chief goal has been to motivate Canton residents to actively engage with their town; by voting serving on town boards, volunteering with community groups and generally taking part in community life. Among many interests she was an avid reader, accomplished pianist, watercolorist, seamstress and gardener. In addition to her loving husband of 52 years, she is survived by her two sons, Benjamin Wylie Kubas and his wife Shannon of Eugene, Oregon and Justin David Kubas and his wife Amanda of Torrington, CT; her sisters Wilmina Sydnor of Baltimore, MD, Susan Wagner and her husband, Harold Wagner II of Dravosburg, PA; grandchildren, Aidan, Ty, Rory, Annika Paige and Zachary Wylie; step grandchildren, Zayah and Neeiah Taber and numerous nieces and nephews. Her family will receive friends at the Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike in Canton on Friday, November 1 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 2 at St. Patrick Church in Collinsville. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Memorial donations, may be made to the Canton Food Bank, 55 River Rd, Collinsville, CT.
