Robert James Goodenow died Saturday, December 15, 2007, after a long illness. He was known professionally as an accomplished innovator in the world of communications technology, a master craftsman, a supporter of peace and justice, and a steward of earth’s resources. Born February 10, 1944 in Patterson, New Jersey, son of Purley Montreville Goodenow and Doris (Kells) Goodenow, he held dear the heritage of family and strove always to live by: “To whom much is given, much is expected.’’ A graduate of Metuchen High School, Class of 1962 in Whippany, New Jersey, he received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics degree from Parsons College (Iowa) in 1966 followed by graduate studies in Business Administration at New York University. His Corporate career began with Coopers and Lybrand, designing and implementing telecommunication networks. In 1976 as Manager of the Advanced Technology Office Program at Citicorp he designed and delivered the first electronic mail system, known as Management Work Station. He subsequently built the Micro-image Technology Laboratory firm which became the CITISprint product, a materials management system that networked suppliers to work stations. He implemented the first all digital voice/data network for ITT and designed and delivered automated International Direct Distance Dial processes. As Director of New Business Development at United Technologies’ Building Systems Company, he was responsible for the design and implementation of United Technologies’ new businesses in health care and telecommunications. For the Carter Administration he gave the opening remarks and a separate presentation to the 1979 White House Conference on Library and Information Services which was focused on telecommunications opportunities. His recommendations on the evolution of a networked society and how this would enhance productivity were submitted to Congress. He retired from the corporate world to return to his first love, the craftsmanship of building, restoring and maintaining fine residences, which he learned at his father’s side as a teen. His great loves - his son Cliff, the Yankees, and the heritage of New England- were always clearly and quickly known to anyone who made his acquaintance, and honored by all who knew him as friend. He is predeceased by his father. He leaves his son Clifford Nicholas; his brother Ronald (Carol) of Northborough, MA; two dearly loved nieces, Rachel and Ellen; and his mother, Doris Goodenow of Beacon Point, FL.
