Vincent Santangelo

Vincent “Vinny” James Santangelo, 94, of Hartford, beloved husband of Betty-Ann Astrid Santangelo, entered the gates of Heaven on Tuesday December 12, 2017. Born, September 1, 1923, in Adrano, Sicily; son of the late Angelo and Josephine Santangelo. Upon retiring to New Hartford with his daughter, Beth and his grandchildren, he took up bird watching and country life. He enjoyed his lifelong trade as a shoe-maker at his store prominently poised in downtown Hartford and known as “Nick’s Shoe Repair”. He was fondly known to all as the “Saver of Soles” and helped those who were less fortunate than him. With pride he was a member of the “Greatest Generation” serving in the US Army during World War II and a devoted member of South Congregational Church in Hartford. He was a member of the Shoe Makers Association, the VASA Club, Half-Century Club and the CT Art League. His loves were his wife Betty of 75 years, his Shoe shop, family and the Arts. The consummate joker and one of the friendliest people to know. He is survived by his wife, Betty-Ann and his children April Johnson and her husband Lloyd, James Santangelo and his wife Anne, Mary-Linnea Santangelo, Lisa Santangelo and Beth Terra and her husband Lawrence. His grandchildren, Kimberly, Eric, James, Anna, Jessica, Brooks, Kara, Mia, Mayavati, Libby, Aakash, Deepak, Wyatt, Lilly-Beth and eight great grandchildren. His sisters, Catherine St. Hilaire, Tina Pelletier and many nieces and nephews. Vinny enters heaven to join his brother, Joseph, sister, Sarah and his son Robert Santangelo. His contagious laugh, gentle nature and his sneezing after over eating will be missed but his love and legacy will be eternal. The family extends a special thanks to Torrington Health and Rehabilitation for their love for Vinny, Geer and Foothills VNA. A celebration of life will be held on January 6, 2018 at South Congregational Church in Harford at 12:30 PM and a reception immediately thereafter. In lieu of flowers the family is collecting donations for Italian Children’s Mission of the Casa Materna Society /Orphanage in Naples Italy, where he visited and supported. Grazie!
