Noreen Mitchell

Noreen (McHugh) Mitchell, 91, of West Hartford formerly of Wethersfield, loving wife to the late Denis J. Mitchell, peacefully passed away Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at St. Mary Home, West Hartford. Noreen was born June 28, 1928 and raised in Cloonfad, County Roscommon, Ireland, one of six children of the late Michael and Mary (Burke) McHugh. She emigrated to the US during her late teen years, residing in New York City, then moving to Hartford where she and Denis raised their son Dennis Jr. She was a member of Corpus Christi Church and was employed for many years at Stop & Shop prior to her retirement. Noreen was an excellent baker, who made a mean Irish Soda Bread and wonderful pies. She loved to dance and had a heart of gold. Noreen and Denis’ home was an open door to anyone who needed a place to stay, especially immigrants from Ireland. Noreen will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her two grandchildren, Katie Mitchell of Latham, NY and John Mitchell of North Haven; and her two sisters, Margaret Mary Egan of Berlin, and Winifred Dunleavy of Glastonbury. In addition to her husband Denis and her parents, Noreen was predeceased by her son Dennis J. Mitchell Jr., a sister, Sheila Dunleavy; and her two brothers, Mido McHugh and Sean McHugh. Noreen’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff and nurses at St. Mary Home for the care they provided Noreen over the last few years. Friends and relatives may pay their respects to the family Friday, August 23, 2019 from 9:30-10:30am at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield, with a Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating Noreen’s life at 11am in Corpus Christi Church of Christ the King Parish, 601 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield.
