John S. Wiggins Obituary

On the evening of April 5, 2020, John Sylvester Wiggins, took an evening, nonstop flight to Glory to be in the presence of our King. He was 81. John, “Johnny Cake”, as he was affectionately known, was born September 12, 1938, to Alice Wiggins Dozier and Richard Beverly, in Middletown, Delaware. John attended Louis L Redding High School, where he played basketball and played center on the football team. Following school, John accepted a position with New Castle County. He committed 39 ½ years, from April 7, 1961, retiring on November 1, 2000. After retiring, he was employed with Appoquinimink School District for four years, as a custodian. John was a dedicated member of Trinity A.M.E. Church, where he served on various committees within the church. He loved his pastor and Trinity Church Family. It was said that John was the first to the altar every Sunday when the pastor extended the altar prayer request. John was a dedicated Honorary Past Master of Stone Square Lodge #22, of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Delaware, since April, 1962. He enjoyed traveling to the local Lodges Annual BBQ’s and serving as the treasurer for his lodge. John was extremely excited when his niece, Pam joined the Order of the Eastern Star. John loved taking trips with his wife, family gatherings and his daily walks around Middletown, until his health prevented him from doing so. John was proud of his Wiggins Family heritage and loved telling old family stories about living in the Big House on Lake Street. In 1970, he took on the role of fatherhood to his two nieces, Pam & Francine, who were his pride and joy. John was preceded in death by his mother & devoted stepfather, Alice Wiggins & Vernon Dozier; father & stepmother, Richard & Theola Beverly and son, LeRoy “Punchie” Moody. John leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 25 years, Justine Towns Wiggins; three sons, Brian Walker, John and Anthony Towns; three daughters/nieces, Pamela Watson (Eugene), Francine Boyd (Ted) and Audrey Towns-Kane; one brother, James Cooper (Florence); daughter-in-law, JoAnn Moody; two sisters-in-law, Mary Smith (Charles) and Geraldine Johnson; 12 grandchildren; one devoted granddaughter, Shannon Smith; 16 great grandchildren; devoted cousin, Sherry Daniels; two devoted friends, Jimmy Blackson & Kenny Davis; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
