Courtney Anthony Barrett

Courtney Anthony Barrett (Rudy) aka Manuel, Blacks the General was the first born to Pamella Murray and the late Uriel Barrett on October 1st, 1966 in Lacovia St. Elizabeth Jamaica West Indies. He attended the Lacovia Primary and Santa Cruz all age school, and Lacovia Secondary (now Lacovia High School). As a young man he was very meticulous and used his hands for creativity. He was very handy around the house capable of repairing anything and everything; It did not matter if it were plumbing, electrical etc you named it and he would fix it. He worked at the Agro farm in Holland and then went on to do farm work in Canada. At a young age he had his first child Tashna (Kamile) and then his son Odrae. In May of 1991 he migrated to Florida seeking opportunities to better himself and to care for his children whom he left behind with his mother. He lived with his father and assisted him with the business of selling merchandise. Courtney later met and fell in love with Salena Williams who he then married in 1995. This union brought his daughter Tempris (the apple of his eye) into this world followed by his fourth child Shamar who loved his dad dearly. Courtney had a passion for soccer whether for fun or in competition. He would return to Jamaica in the summertime for soccer competitions and to distribute gifts and trophies to the community. Courtney would also supply the children with book bags and supplies to return to school. He was loved by everyone. He was very patriotic and dedicated. He always made himself available to help anyone visiting or moving to South Florida. Challenges never inspired fear in him, and he was very hard working. Courtney was kind and loving but would not be mistaken for weakness. In 2017 he lost strength in his right arm and then was later diagnosed with ALS. Progressively his condition worsened and on August 4th, 2018 he was admitted to Florida Medical Center with respiratory insufficiency from the ALS. During his almost 2 year stay he was well taken care of and frequently visited by family and friends until March of 2020 when COVID-19 caused distancing and forbid visitation. In June of 2020 he was placed in a facility in Miami which also did not allow friends or family to visit contributing to his worsening conditions and leading to a rapid decline in health. October 11th, he was admitted to Northshore hospital in Miami where his health took a turn for the worse. On Thursday January 14th, 2021 at around 8:30am Courtney slipped away from us leaving behind his loving mother Pamella; children, Tashna (Kamile), Odrae, Tempris and Shamar; Sisters, Jacinth and Marsha; Brothers, Garrett, Uriel Jr., Shaquille, and Alex; Grandson, Lamar; Aunts, Marva (Auntie Herfa), Patsy and Luna; Uncles, John, and Sherman; and a host of loving relatives and friends. May his legacy live on, and his loving soul rest in peace. He will be forever in our hearts.
