Gretha Lee McHenry Johnson Obituary

Gretha Lee McHenry Johnson was born on October 5, 1929, to the parentage of Willie McHenry, Sr. and Eva Mitchell McHenry (who preceded her in death). Gretha celebrated her 91st Birthday surrounded by family and ending the evening with a Zoom Birthday Celebration. Gretha had three (3) brothers: James Boyd, Willie McHenry, Jr, Elijah McHenry and three (3) sisters: Eloise Scott, Alice Isham Blue and Hazel McHenry, they all preceded her in death. She made her transition on Sunday, November 15, 2020, to her Heavenly Home. Gretha attended school at Pompano Beach Colored School, in Pompano Beach, FL. On May 29, 1946 Gretha was joined in Holy Matrimony to Willie James Johnson (Golly Baby). God blessed them with five (5) children. She was very creative with her hands, loved sewing, upholstery and making ceramic items to give as gifts to her family and friends. When her daughters were young, she would make matching outfits for Easter and Mother’s Day. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed cooking and inviting family and friends to dinner. Gretha was a strict disciplinarian, she expected her children to obey the rules and show total respect. She loved her children and supported them in all of their school and extracurricular activities, including shopping for musical instruments, and gowns for her three (3) daughters as they were each celebrated as queens at different times during their high school years. She was a devout Christian, and Gretha taught her children and grandchildren the Word of the God. She made sure they attended Sunday School, Bible Study, Sunday Services and participated in different aspects of the church, Choir, Usher Ministry, YFFU (Young Folks Friends & Union), State Conventions, Christmas and Easter Programs. Gretha was a woman of great wisdom. Her friends enjoyed spending time with her, because she never judged, and showed the love of Jesus Christ through her actions. They enjoyed spending time with her, going shopping (other than church, her favorite past time), taking cruises, gardening, and having lunch. During her early years, Gretha, was a dedicated member of The House of God Church and Truth Tabernacle of God. In 1997, she became a dedicated member of The Faith Center Ministries (TFC) until she could not longer attend physically, but she would watch TFC streaming services, Christian TV, pray, sing and many times praise God in her Heavenly Language. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchild shared many HAPPY EXPERIENCES with her. She was a caring and nurturing surrogate grandmother during her employment at Cynthia & JuNica’s Preschool. She will be missed, but will live in our HEARTS FOREVER.
