Gwendoline Campbell Lauderdale Lakes, Florida Obituary

Gwendoline Campbell

Gwendoline Agatha Adams was born on November 5, 1928 in Kingston, Jamaica to Ivanhoe Adams and Catherine White-Adams. Her nickname was ‘Blanche Adams’ to old friends and anyone in Jamaica. Her first job was at the Coffee Industry Board picking out bad coffee beans from the belt. During that time she met Noel Kelly and had her only child, Darnhavan (Dawn). She moved to the Rosalea Avenue, Waltham Park area in Kingston and later settled in Pembroke Hall. After leaving the Coffee Board, she went on to work at Spence Furniture Store and later went to work at Sally Brassier Factory. As a single mother, she worked hard to take care of her daughter, ailing mother, and also raise her niece, Elreth, and nephew, Clifton. She migrated to New York in 1963 and worked with the Riessman family as the nanny for their three children. During that time she met and married Sybert Campbell who passed away a few years later. When the Riessman children got older, Gwen went to work at New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center in the Dietary Department. She resigned from her position at the hospital and moved to Florida in 1982, when her daughter and grandchildren relocated from the Bronx, NY to Lauderhill, Florida. Gwen wanted to be close to her family and to help with the care of her grandchildren. The family became active members of the Church of Atonement in Lauderdale Lakes. Gwen loved fashion and had a great shoe and hat collection. She loved to socialize and enjoyed parties, traveling (especially cruises) and dining out. No matter where she went she always made a connection with the people she met (especially children). She was always been a people person, willing to give or open her door to anyone in need of a place to stay. Gwendoline passed away on October 16, 2017 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and went home to be with the Lord. She is survived by her only child, Darnhavan (Dawn) Kelly, three grandchildren - Sean, Osieba, and Diavonni, and her four great grandchildren John, Amecha, Geneva, and Raydon, and niece – Elreth Moore, and grandnieces and grandnephews, and many, many family and friends.
