Rossie Callaway Obituary

Rossie Lee Callaway was born on July 15, 1917, to the late Hardy and Elize Cochran-Yates in Grady County, Georgia. Rossie was blessed with a loving, thoughtful and attentive son Roosevelt Tyson. She was later united in Holy Matrimony to the late Junius Callaway. In 1947, she spread her wings and soared from her home of Cairo Georgia and relocated to New York, and later deciding to make Fort Lauderdale, Florida her home for over 60 years. A deep abiding love for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and a firm belief that His Word is the Gospel Truth, led Rossie to joyfully accept Jesus into her heart as personal Savior, She served faithfully as a member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida under the leadership of Pastor George E. Weaver, Rev. Mack King Carter and now the current pastor, Pastor Marcus Davidson for over fifty years until her health failed her. Rossie was known as being the life of the Mount Olive Bus Ministry. Rossie touched the lives of many people with her smile and generosity, and maintained her trademark sense of humor all the way to the end. She loved listening to gospel music, hosting dinner parties, spoiling her grandchildren and being with her family and having fun with her friends. In the year of 2000, the 100 Black Women honored Rossie as the Mother of the Year. She was known to many people as Rock, Grandma Rock, Granny, Mama Rock, and Sally. She will always be remembered for some of her favorite sayings: “Love ye one another; be good to everybody; and you hungry, go in there and get you something to eat.” She was always concerned about her fellow man. Rossie was preceded in death by love ones to include her parents, siblings and her oldest granddaughter Latrice B. Roland Smith. She leaves to cherish her memories, laughter and fun, to her loving, compassionate and devoted son, Roosevelt (Irene) Tyson, Florida; granddaughters: Stephanie Vickers (GA), Angie Tyson and Sandra Bennett, Florida; great grandchildren: Anitra Roland, Laci and Stasi Roland, Richard and Tiffany Bennett, Florida; Kristian Vickers (GA); great-great grandchildren: Daevon and Davaris Floyd, Dorian Wildgoose, Jason Coley, Jr., Preston (PJ) McBurrows, Ja’Quezz and Kaiden Roland, Destiny Bennett all of Fort Lauderdale, FL; godson: John (Bro) Franklin (GA); and a host of loving and caring nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
