Victoria Tulloch was born in St. Catherines, Jamaica, to James
Tulloch and Agathe Dawkins on December 31st, 1931. My
mother shared the story of her birth with me, and as she explains
it, it was just minutes to midnight, and her mother was attending
a watch service to welcome in the New Year of 1932. She began
feeling labor pains, and a member of the congregation notified
the pastor. At that point, the pastor advised her she needed to
leave, as she could soon give birth. Her mother walked miles to
her home and gave birth that night.
As a child, she went by the name “Girlie,” but as she matured into
adulthood, she would be called “Queen Victoria” by her close
family and friends. It was a namesake she rightfully earned. As
a young adult in Jamaica, she owned her own grocery store, and
when she came to the United States, she was a professional nanny
who was entrusted to care for and nurture various youth. She also
worked as a nursing assistant at Bronx State Hospital.
Over time, she would travel to various countries such as
London, Paris, and Canada, As well as places within New York,
Pennsylvania, and Boston within the United States to gain
knowledge and experience in her endeavors. Victoria had a love
like no other for Jesus, and was strong in her faith, and would
spread the gospel at the drop of a dime. She carried a deep love of
singing and praising the Lord.
Victoria had a unique love language and would show a lot of her
love through her actions. She took a very active role in the lives of
all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was a strong believer in a good quality of life and not cutting
corners. A strong woman who made the best of what life had to
offer her. She will be dearly missed and loved!
Victoria Tulloch had five children; her youngest son, Michael,
preceded her in death in 1978.
Victoria leaves behind: her son, Dennis; three daughters, Dawn,
and Marvia, who were devoted caretakers to the end, and Monica;
four grandsons, Chris, Sr., O’neil, Ashton, and Winston, Jr.;
great-grandchildren, Chris, Jr., and Madyson; and a host of other
relatives and friends.
