Bette B Adams Obituary

Bette B. Adams passed away peacefully on August 24, 2015, with her family at her bedside. She was born in Massillon, Ohio on June 21, 1927, to Zelda Lee Cain and William Arthur Barton. One of five children, she grew up laughing and playing with her siblings, Ginger, Janet, Nancy, and Billy. She loved to reminisce about roller skating and playing jump rope in the circular driveway of their Wales Road home. Bette will be forever remembered by her many friends and family, including her children and their spouses: Janet Adams Mayeaux and Dennis, Stephen William Adams and Deb, and David Whitney Adams and Tina. Bette was "Mommygran" to Marc Peter Adams, Mary Elizabeth Adams (Molly), and Emily Whitney Adams, Carolyn Mayeaux Glasshoff (Jesse), Stephen James Mayeaux, and Christine Elizabeth Mayeaux, as well as her great grandson, Peter James Mayeaux. If there was one word to describe Bette, that word would be love. All of her family were blessed by her boundless devotion and she bestowed everything she could on them. Birthdays in particular were always elevated to very special celebrations. She loved not only receiving presents, but giving them. Her joy infected everyone around her. Growing up, Bette attended Washington High School in Massillon and was proud to be a Massillon Tiger. After attending The Ohio State University, she graduated from Canton Actuary, became a professional secretary, and worked for the president of the B&O Railroad located on the top floor of the Terminal Tower in Cleveland. Bette married her childhood sweetheart, Dale Duane Adams, in 1948, and they remained married for 68 years. Dale preceded her in death by less than a year. Together they raised their family. Bette was the true matriarch who kept everyone connected. Family was everything to her, and she was a wonderful mother. Dale and Bette moved from Cleveland to Venice, Florida, in 1969 where they developed Florida Horizons Roofing and Sheetmetal, Inc. into a major roofing company. After twenty years, they retired to Mount Dora, Florida, where they made many close friends through their memberships in St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, the Silver Lakes Country Club and the Mount Dora Yacht Club. Later, they moved to Milton, Florida, and lived on the eighteenth fairway of the Tanglewood Country Club. Bette always had fun. Dale and Better loved being together. Their favorite pastimes were church, golf, boating, and entertaining. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed looking through cookbooks. She loved to have small dinner parties for her friends. Relaxing during the five o' clock cocktail hour with Dale was a daily tradition. (Their favorite was scotch and water). A fabulous decorator, Bette took pride in her home, and it was always beautiful and welcoming. The family would like to most humbly extend their appreciation and gratitude to many people. Donna Kelley, June Lyon, and Kim Broxson provided care to Dale and Bette in their home that was truly loving and caring. They became family to all of us. There are no words that can express how wonderfully the staff and residents at Santa Rosa Health and Rehabilitation cared for the both of them. Dale and Bette were called “the little family.” All of the smiles and love from the staff will be forever in our hearts. Thank you also to Barbara Craig, Father Matt Dollahusen, and Monsignor Reed for all of the visits and their spiritual care. Thank you to Mike Lewis at Lewis Funeral Home for helping with all of the final arrangements. And finally, Dennis and Jan would like to thank all our friends for all of the heartfelt support you provided to us in the past few years. A memorial service will be held in Tampa, Florida, at St. John's Episcopal Church on September 3, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Bette will be interred at Barrancas National Cemetery with Dale. Lewis Funeral Home, Milton has been entrusted with arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 6849 Oak Street, Milton, FL 32570. In lieu of flowers, please go out to dinner in memory of Bette. She would love it. The Bible says there is Faith, Hope, and Love, and the greatest of these is love. May God bless Dale and Bette in Heaven. They will always be remembered and cherished.
