Charles Spencer Obituary

Charles “Holley” Spencer, age 87, of Milton, Florida, passed away peacefully at a local hospice facility on June 27, 2014, after a brief illness. He was born on November 28, 1926, along with his twin brother, Clifton, to James A. Spencer and Carrie Mae McMillan Spencer. The twins were the talk of the town. Their antics and pranks were entertaining to all who have known them throughout their lives. Holley attended elementary and high school in Milton, and graduated from Marion Military Institute in Marion, Alabama. Marion Military Institute had such an influence on his life that he sent his two sons, Ken and Don, to follow him in his footsteps at Marion. Holley served in the Army with Clifton and they were stationed in Rome, Italy, after WWII. He attended FSU for two years and returned home to manage the family property and to work in the family sawmill. In 1961, Holley along with Clifton and Johnnie, aka Spencer Brothers, built the first Shopping Center in Santa Rosa County, Gateway Plaza, which the family still manages. The Spencer Brothers were successful businessmen their entire lives. As children, Holley and Clifton loved to hunt and fish. His dream was to hunt in Alaska for bear. Not only did he meet his dream for an Alaskan bear hunt, he exceeded his dream and hunted the world with his sons and Clifton. His dream took him to Alaska, New Mexico, Wyoming, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, North Dakota, Missouri, and throughout the United States and Canada, Argentina, and South Africa. He also loved to go fishing in Central and South Florida with his son-in-law Steve. He loved life and always said, “He had done everything he wanted to do in life and some things he had done twice”. Holley always had a positive outlook and lived life to it fullest. He made many friends throughout the country and loved them all. His stories always kept your attention and made you laugh. His personality will always be remembered. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bud, Almon, Johnnie and Clifton. He leaves behind his beloved sons and daughter: Ken Spencer, daughter-in-law Trish; Don Spencer, daughter-in-law Beverly; Jennifer Robey, son-in-law Steve, and granddaughter Shannon, and many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at First Baptist Church of Milton, with Dr. David Spencer officiating. Burial to follow in the Milton Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Lewis Funeral Home Milton Chapel. Special thanks to the professional and loving care provided by the 4th floor staff at West Florida Hospital and the nursing staff at Covenant Hospice Inpatient Care Center of West Florida Hospital. Pallbearers will be Bret Watson, Mike McCombs, Paul Green, Ollie Sample, Butch Lindsay, and Roy Andrews. Honorary Pallbearers are Paul Amos, Danny Amos, Jimmy Golden, Jimmy Irby, Jack Locklin, Cotton Byrom, Wilburn Christian, Harry Kahn, Ned McMath, Bill Jones, Whit Wilkerson and his Early Morning Coffee Crew.
