Dorothy Reynolds Obituary

Dorothy May “Dottie” (Clarke) Reynolds, 83, of Holley by the Sea, passed gracefully into everlasting peace on Thursday, March 7, 2019. Dorothy was originally from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, U.K., and had lived in the U.S. since 1954. Upon her arrival aboard the Queen Mary, she quickly acclimated to the American culture while never forgetting her roots back home. Living in Frank Sinatra's hometown of Hoboken, Dottie enjoyed watching the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary arrive and depart their berths in the Hudson River, New York Harbor, from the unobstructed view of the Manhattan skyline from her home on Hudson Street. Her "New World experiences” was quite different from the English countryside she had left behind. Our shy British lady went from "tea time” to “living next door to Maxwell House Coffee.” "Girlie" as she was affectionately known by her siblings, boldly pressured her husband to purchase their beach vacation bungalow, moving her family of three boys to Cliffwood Beach, New Jersey, where she raised them, as said in the Queen's English, “in a proper home.” She spent most of her life there before retiring to Holley by the Sea in Navarre. During her wonderful blessed life, filled with love, Dorothy worked as a switchboard operator, a restaurant hostess, a real estate agent, a crossing guard and, most importantly, she retired as the first female police dispatcher for Monroe Township, New Jersey. Dorothy was recognized by the New Jersey State Governor Christine Todd Whitman for shattering the glass ceiling in a position that had predominantly been held by men. Her firm belief of "giving back" and selfless sacrifice was felt by all who were touched by her kindness and generosity in the many organizations she belonged to, including The Cosmopolitan Club, Red Hats, the many British Groups, and delivering Meals on Wheels to the sick and less fortunate. The friends she attained are the living proof of the plethora of talents Dorothy possessed. Her love of gardening was paramount. At peace in her garden, and in the lovely gardens of her friends in Navarre, is where she found solace. Her companions of the Navarre Garden Club were some of her fondest. Dorothy loved the Navarre Senior Center and thoroughly enjoyed all the activities with her friends at the Holley by the Sea Recreation Center. She could be found at the recreation center often, swimming, dancing or doing yoga. Dorothy was preceded in death, by her beloved brother, David Clarke of High Wycombe; and her parents, Frank and Gladys (Saunders) Clarke. Dorothy is survived by her husband of 65 years, Paul John Reynolds of Navarre, Florida; her two sisters, Jean and Margaret; two brothers, Allen and Mick of the U.K.; her three sons, Robert Paul (Loraine) Reynolds of Pensacola, Florida, Stephen Michael (Suzanne) Reynolds of Princeton, New Jersey, and David James Reynolds of Pennsylvania. Dorothy was known as "Nan" to her three grandchildren, Jeffrey, Kimberly and Jonathan; and her eight great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service, to celebrate and remember the life of Dorothy Reynolds, will be held 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., Saturday, April 6, 2019, at the Navarre Presbyterian Church. The family wishes to thank all of the kind souls who helped in her fight with ALS, Aubrie of Better Healthcare, and most especially, Jeanette, Crystal, Sally, Felicia and Suzie of Emerald Coast Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations may be made, in Dorothy’s name, to the Navarre Garden Club or to Navarre Presbyterian Church.
