A 1937 graduate of Tate High School, Dr. Webb entered the National Guard and served in the Army Coastal Artillery, Pacific Theater in WWII. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Florida and then completed his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University in December of 1956, with his wife and six children in attendance at his graduation. He also had a thriving large animal practice, serving most of the dairy farms in Escambia County. Dr. Webb volunteered as a civic and community leader. He served as the President of the Pensacola Interstate Fair for thirty years, helping to build a strong and thriving livestock show and 4-H pavilions. The Farm Bureau, Boy Scouts, Rotary Club, University Hospital Board, and United Methodist Church also received many hundreds of hours of volunteer service from Dr. Webb. He was a generous and loving man, extravagant with his time and hospitality. He loved people and he loved to host large parties. His home was frequently the scene of dinners, volleyball games, cookouts, and impromptu parties for the youth of Pine Forest United Methodist Church. Dr. John, as the kids called him, loved the youth and they loved him. There was no guile or meanness in him and he could always find a way to be positive about every situation. In addition to his vocation as a veterinarian, Dr. Webb pursued a variety of other careers and interesting jobs. In his youth, he worked on his dad’s dairy farm, then he worked in a florist, he sold clothes in a men’s haberdashery, he owned a boat rental business, he punched a time clock at St. Regis Paper Company, he and his brother owned a barbecue restaurant (Adrian’s Ranch House BarBQ), he worked as the track veterinarian at Greyhound Park, and he worked as a meat inspector at meat processing plants, first for the State of Florida and then for the USDA. He worked full time until he was 87 years old, and continued to work part-time at Greyhound Park until he was 93. On January 17, Dr. Webb celebrated his 100th birthday. He went out to lunch and went for a drive on the beach. On the 19th, his friends and family, over 350 of them, came together to celebrate with him his journey of 100 years. He was so thrilled to see everyone and to share his joy with them! It was a celebration to provide memories for a lifetime. Dr. Webb loved music, he loved people, he loved his family with a fierce and abiding love, and he loved God. He lived his life fully and intentionally and his word was true. However he behaved in public, you can be sure that is how he behaved behind closed doors. His was 100 years of a life well lived. He was preceded in death by his wife, Glenda (Lane) Webb; his parents, John and Lillie (Brewton) Webb; his brother, William F. Webb; his sister, Bettye W. Thayer; and his son, Gordon T. Webb.
